Timothy "Tim" Mayer (born February 22, 1938 in Dalton , Pennsylvania , † February 28, 1964 Longford , Tasmania , Australia ) was an American automobile racing driver .
Career
Tim Mayer began his career in Formula Junior in 1959 . He also studied English literature at the renowned Yale University . In 1962 he competed in the automobile world championship with a factory-fitted Cooper T53 . At the US Grand Prix in Watkins Glen , however, Mayer had to retire after 31 of 100 laps with a gearbox defect. It was his only race in the automobile world championship. The following year he started again in Formula Junior, this time for the team of Ken Tyrrell , who was racing Cooper cars at the time . Despite the inferior material and the superior racing cars from Brabham and Lotus , Mayer was able to achieve good results. Bruce McLaren promoted Mayer's talent and got him a contract for the 1964 World Automobile Championship .
In the winter of 1963/64 Mayer drove together with Bruce McLaren in the Cooper in the Tasman series . Here, too, his talent showed and he was able to get good points results. The American had a fatal accident in the last race of the season. After a driving error, Mayer lost control of his car. His car hit a barrier, crashed into a group of trees and Mayer was thrown out of the cockpit . He died on the way to the hospital six days after his 26th birthday.
His brother Teddy Mayer later became team principal for the McLaren racing team .
