Tim Tams are chocolate chip cookies from Arnott's Biscuits Holdings in Australia . A Tim Tam consists of two layers of biscuit covered with chocolate, between which a light chocolate cream is embedded.

According to Arnott’s , around 35 million packages are sold each year, which corresponds to around 400 million biscuits.

history

Tim Tams were first launched in 1964. The name pays homage from Ross Arnott , the company's founder, to the winning horse of the 1958 Kentucky Derby. The new biscuit was based on the existing British Penguin biscuit . In 2003, Arnott's sued Dick Smith Foods for trademark infringement of their Temptin ' brand cookies , which were similar to Tim Tam and had similarly designed packaging. The case was settled out of court. Smith commented by casting Greg Arnott , a member of the Arnott family, in a commercial for Temptin’s .

From November 2008 to March 2009, Tim Tams were first presented as a promotional item in the US by Pepperidge Farm . They were only sold in Target branches in the Original (offered as Chocolate Crème ) and Caramel variations . At that point, Pepperidge Farm started an online community where visitors could follow the biscuits from Australia to the USA. In October 2009 the two varieties were available again, this time also in the Classic Dark variation and in all supermarkets.

Tim Tam Slam

Jimmy Wales at the Tim Tam Slam

The Tim Tam Slam is the art of biting off the ends of the Tim Tam and using the biscuit as a straw to soak up a hot drink. It was performed by Natalie Imbruglia and host Graham Norton in the So Graham Norton TV series in the USA . American actress Jennifer Love Hewitt also performed it live on Rove McManu's Australian talk show Rove Live .

execution

Two opposite corners of the biscuit are bitten off and one end is dipped in a drink (usually coffee ). If you suck on the biscuit, the drink is drawn through the biscuit, similar to a straw. The crispy inner biscuit will soften and the outer chocolate coating will begin to melt. Ideally, the inside of the cookie should collapse, but the outside should remain intact long enough for the liquid to reach your mouth. A chilled biscuit helps maintain the outside layer while the inside melts.

The thick chocolate coating of the Tim Tam Double Coat provides a more stable structure that prevents premature collapse. The caramel center of Tim Tam Chewy Caramel also helps to hold the biscuit together for a longer time. Arnott’s used the name Tim Tam Suck in an advertising campaign in 2002 .

World record attempt

On Australia Day 2004 200 people in a bar in trying Croydon ( England ) and supposedly 30,000 people in the entire United States set a world record attempt in tea drinking by Tim Tams .
