Timothée Atouba Essama (born February 17, 1982 in Douala , Cameroon ) is a former Cameroonian football player .

Career

Switzerland

Timothée Atouba moved in July 2000 from his home club Union Douala to the Swiss first division club Neuchâtel Xamax . During the 2001/02 winter break, Atouba moved to league rivals FC Basel , with whom he was Swiss champion twice and the Swiss Cup twice. Atouba also played in the Champions League in the 2002/2003 season, where he scored 3-0 for FC Basel after 30 minutes against Liverpool. In the end it was 3: 3, which meant that FC Basel could qualify for the next round.

Tottenham

Despite a contract until June 2006, Atouba left FC Basel in August 2004 for London , where he was signed by Tottenham Hotspur. His only goal on Matchday 2 for a 1-0 win at Newcastle United was one of the few highlights in England. After the winter break, the Cameroonian was rarely used.

Hamburg

After only one year at the London suburban club, Atouba finally moved to the Bundesliga club Hamburger SV . There he played as a left defender and quickly became a crowd favorite due to his provocative style of play.

Atouba lost this status due to a scandal in the Champions League game against CSKA Moscow on December 6, 2006 in part. Due to persistent whistles from his own fans, Atouba asked the then coach Thomas Doll to be substituted. When he was replaced, he was loudly whistled by the spectators and filled with beer mugs. Atouba then showed them the finger , which the referee punished with a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct . At the following home game, some of the HSV fans supported him again with chants. As a result, however, the negative headlines about Atouba did not stop. On January 13, 2007 he had to break off the joint training camp in the United Arab Emirates and fly back to Hamburg without the team because of incidents that were not further specified by the club's management.

Since July 2nd, 2007 Atouba has been the godfather of the Albrecht-Thaer-Gymnasium in Hamburg-Stellingen for the action School without Racism - School with Courage , which actively campaigns against racism in everyday life.

On February 16, 2008 Timothée Atouba was suspended from team training for three days because he did not return in time for a UEFA Cup game at Hamburger SV after the Africa Cup final.

Amsterdam

After Hamburger SV had not renewed his contract, Atouba followed coach Martin Jol to Ajax Amsterdam for the 2009/10 season , where he received a contract until the summer of 2011 with an option for a further two years. He could not prevail on the left-back position against the young Vurnon Anita and came in the entire 2009/10 season for only one use. Even after the coach change to Frank de Boer Atouba remained a substitute player; de Boer preferred his former youth player Daley Blind .

Las Palmas

After a long absence from a club, Atouba signed a contract with UD Las Palmas in November 2012 . At the club from the island of Gran Canaria he played in the Segunda División until June 2014 . This was his last stop as a professional footballer.

National team

In 2003 he was appointed to the national team of Cameroon , where he played during the FIFA Confederations Cup 2003 on June 19, 2003 against Brazil and ten days later lost the final against France with Cameroon only after extra time . By 2008 Atouba completed 42 international matches, but did not score a goal.
