He started the 400-meter run in elementary school and also did the 400-meter hurdles and 800-meter run when he moved to Nanyuki High School . After graduating from high school in 1999, he tried to set up a milk distribution business, but when it failed he started running again. In 2002 he joined a training group led by Wilfred Bungei and improved his time over 1500 m to 3: 42.7 min.

In 2003, on the recommendation of Bungei, he was signed by manager Gianni Demadonna and worked as a pacemaker in races in Europe. On June 3rd he ran the 1500 m in Milan in 3: 34.07 min. The attempt to qualify for the 2003 World Athletics Championships failed due to food poisoning.

After he was on the road again as a pacemaker in the indoor season (including for the world record over 5000 m by Kenenisa Bekele ), he concentrated on running for himself. Third in the Kenyan eliminations, he went to the Olympic Games in Athens , where he finished fourth over 1500 m.

Timothy Too Kiptanui belongs to the Nandi ethnic group . He inherited the nickname "Swara" (antelope) from his grandfather, which he acquired by hunting antelopes by running after them until they collapsed from exhaustion.
