action

Lara Jean Song Covey is a 16-year-old girl who tends to hide in high school and doesn't have many friends. She is very closely related to her older sister Margot and younger sister Kitty. That is why it is very difficult for her to let Margot go when she goes to a university in Scotland .

Lara Jean keeps love letters to all five boys she once loved in a hat box that her late mother gave her during her lifetime. These guys include their neighbor Josh Sanderson, whom Margot separated from when she went to college. Her younger sister Kitty is worried about Lara Jean and takes an opportunity to actually send these letters.

Shortly afterwards, Peter Kavinsky approaches Lara Jean and says that he is honored, but does not reciprocate her feelings. Then Lara Jean realizes that her letters have been sent to her five (former) crushes. She is especially embarrassed about her feelings for Josh and avoids him. To show Josh that she no longer loves him, she hits Peter with a touch of panic with a kiss. Peter suggests that they pretend they are a couple for a while. Peter hopes to win back his longtime friend Genevieve, Lara Jean's enemy. Lara Jean agrees to keep Josh away, and the two make a list of basic rules for their feigned relationship. These include daily little letters from Peter in which he writes her something nice to make Genevieve jealous, as well as a visit to the ski camp. The more time they spend together, the more blurry the real and fake parts of this relationship become and real feelings develop. When Josh learns about the relationship, he is jealous of Peter because he doesn't want Peter to hurt Lara Jean and because he wonders how he would have acted if he had known about Lara Jean's feelings for him back then. In the meantime, Lara Jean has realized that she no longer loves Josh and that she wants to meet Peter out of real feelings.

At the ski camp, Peter tells Lara Jean that he wants to go out with her and they kiss in a hot tub. The next day, a video is posted showing the two of them, and everyone tells them the couple had sex. Humiliated, Lara Jean breaks off contact with Peter when she learns from Genevieve that he was in her room that same night. However, he visits her at home with her family. When Peter tries to speak to Lara Jean, Josh shows up to protect her. Margot, who is visiting for Christmas, learns that Lara Jean had feelings for Josh.

Margot and Lara Jean make up, but Lara Jean remains angry with Peter. Kitty admits she stole her sister's hatbox and mailed the letters. She also shows her sister all the letters from Peter, which she threw away unopened and in which he reveals his true feelings for her. Peter separates from Genevieve because she put the video online. Lara Jean and Peter make up and become a couple. You and Josh will become friends again.
