action

Harper, a law student and all-round good guy, suspects his beating stepfather Vincent is responsible for the car accident that put his mother into a coma. One evening when Harper wanted to drown his worries in a shabby whiskey bar in Los Angeles, he was approached by a pushy redneck named Johnny Ray, who agreed for US $ 20,000 to deal with the "problem", that is, his stepfather , take care of. Annoyed, seeking revenge, and driven by alcohol, Harper agrees to the deal and spends the rest of the evening drinking shorts with Johnny Ray.

The next morning, Harper wakes up with a hangover and finds his mother's will forged by his stepfather. When Harper confronts his stepfather, there is a duel in which Vincent is killed. After stowing the body in the trunk of the garage, Ray knocks on the door with Cherry in tow. He wants to go to Las Vegas with Harper. Harper explains that he was drunk and didn't know what he was doing and saying the night before. Ray insists on keeping the deal, however, and Harper quickly realizes that he won't get out of it that easily. Harper manages to frame Ray for his stepfather's murder. While Ray arrives in prison, Harper escapes to Mexico with Cherry.

production

Staff and cast

The director took Christopher Smith , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Smith, who is a huge fan of Fritz Lang's film noir Dangerous Encounters , admitted an inspiration from that film. In Dangerous Encounters it is the main character played by Edward G. Robinson , Richard Wanley, a respected professor who kills someone in self-defense and tries to cover up the murder. This character, according to Smith, makes a lot of wrong decisions, but is actually a very good guy who does things that are not common in his world; an intellectual type who now finds himself in a world of bad guys. Everything Wanley knew from textbooks up until then could not help him control the situation, says Smith, who wanted his film to tell a modern version of this story.

The main role of Harper, a law student and actually a nice guy, was played by Tye Sheridan . Stephen Moyer can be seen in the role of his stepfather Vincent. Emory Cohen played Johnny Ray and Bel Powley played his girlfriend Cherry.

Filming

The road trip through America was filmed in South Africa , like here in Cape Town . For this, however, the road signs had to be replaced

The film was shot in South Africa and the USA. Filming began in Cape Town in February 2015 . All of the scenes that take place during the road trip, which in the film runs from the USA to Mexico , were filmed in South Africa . According to Smith, this posed great challenges for the production, as traffic had to be interrupted in places, signs had to be replaced on highways and these had to be replaced with American signage so that the film looked authentically American.

Reviews

IndieWire's Kimber Myers says there are a few surprises in the film. Even if the viewer thinks they know everything, another layer has been laid over the sometimes confused structure of the film, which sometimes makes the story seem illogical. The gimmick with the alternate timeline makes the film interesting, but it cannot hide the fact that the narrative is sometimes extremely chaotic. The script, according to Myers, tries too hard to appear clever and tries too hard to use hard dialogues that are familiar from classic noir films , but they are without their wit.

Joe Leydon of Variety says the neo-noir thriller makes a little use of the film She loves him - she doesn't love him .
