Title copper from Beutel Tobias Arboretum Mathematicum , 1671

Tobias Beutel (* around 1627; † July 28, 1690 in Dresden ) was a German mathematician , astronomer and electoral secretary in Dresden. On June 21, 1658 he became an art treasurer , ie he was given supervision of the art chamber of the Saxon electors. He died in Dresden in 1690 as an "emeritus".

After the death of his assistant and successor Conrad Conradi in December of the same year, his nephew Tobias Beutel the Younger took over the supervision of the Kunstkammer and later the cabinet of mathematical and physical instruments until he died in 1739.

Bags wrote a number of writings on mathematics and astronomy, some of which were reprinted several times. His arithmetic had eight editions by 1735, and his geometrical pleasure garden was also published in 1737 in its eighth edition. In it, Beutel deals with geometry and stereometry based on Euclid . The book also contains instructions for field measurement and is enriched with many examples. Bag's other writings refer to astronomical events and also include popular theological-astrological interpretations. His Chur-Fürstlicher Sächsischer, always green, high cedar forest / Auf dem green Rauten-Grund is a bilingual description of the Dresden Kunstkammer in German and Latin.

Despite his extensive knowledge, he could not get used to the Copernican view of the world and believed that the sun revolved around the earth, because he had calculated what a tremendous speed the earth would have to reach in order to be able to orbit the sun - no grass could do it grow and people would be very shaken both in their camps and in their workshops.
