Todd Gitlin ( January 6, 1943 - February 5, 2022 in Pittsfield , Massachusetts ) was an American sociologist specializing in media sociology and former spokesman (chairman) of the Students for a Democratic Society , a '68 organization -movement .

career

Gitlin was educated at Harvard University , the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor , and the University of California at Berkeley .

After professorships at Berkeley and New York University , he taught at Columbia University and was a regular columnist for The American Prospect and the website opendemocracy.org .

In spring 2011, Gitlin was a Bosch Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin .

In October 2016 he published together with Peter Beinart , Michael Walzer , Edward Witten , Adam Hochschild and others. an open letter in The New York Review of Books calling for a targeted boycott of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories .

Gitlin was a writer of fiction as well as non-fiction. He died in February 2022 at the age of 79.
