Todos os mortos (international title: All the Dead Ones ) is a Brazilian - French feature film by Caetano Gotardo and Marco Dutra from 2020 . The historical drama, for which the two directors also wrote the script, takes place in Brazil during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century . It depicts the decline of a large white landowning family from the perspective of the mother (portrayed by Thaia Perez ) and her two daughters ( Clarissa Kiste and Carolina Bianchi ) as well as a black female slave ( Mawusi Tulani ).

The world premiere took place on February 23, 2020 as part of the competition at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival .

action

São Paulo , between 1899 and 1900: Mother Isabel Soares and her daughters Maria and Ana witness the decline of their family, former large landowners. Brazil is in a time of change after slavery was abolished eleven years ago by the Lei Áurea and the country is changing from empire to republic. The action is organized around three major national holidays: Independence Day (September 7th), All Saints' Day and Carnival . It begins with the death of the Soares' last housemaid, Josefina, who once worked as a slave on the family's coffee farm. The Soares are on the verge of ruin and are trying to laboriously adapt to the new conditions in the rapidly growing city.

Iná Nascimento, another former slave of the Soares, fights despite all odds to reunite her own family. The intelligent and courageous woman is confronted with a society in which there seems to be no place for the freed slaves. Nevertheless, she manages to work her way to a better life.

All the women in the film try to shape their own future in their own way. The men take a back seat. As a supplier, you cannot rely on them.

background

The two directors Caetano Gotardo and Marco Dutra set their story in 1899/1900 because, according to their own statements, they found structures at the time of the emergence and transformation of Brazilian society that have survived to the present day. "When we talk about the legacy of slavery, we can address issues such as social inequality, work, the presence of black people in culture and society," said Dutra.

reception

Carlo Chatrian , Artistic Director of the Berlinale, emphasized at the official presentation of the competition at the end of January 2020 that the film challenged the popular “narrative form” of cinema. Todos os mortos deals with a black and a white family who are confronted with the legacy of slavery. The directors would take the Brazilian syncretism into account in style and speed .

Awards

With Todos os mortos , Caetano Gotardo and Marco Dutra competed for the first time for the Golden Bear , the main prize of the Berlinale. But the film did not receive an award.
