After early beginnings in painting, Gallmeier works increasingly intermedia , but retains the painterly perspective as a central aspect of her art. In her work she combines elements from stage design, sculpture , performance , painting and photography to create cross-media installations. Her work represents a continuous process: materials, objects and images are placed in different contexts, processed with different techniques, whereby different references and views are created. Gallmeier adds found pieces to her installations in works such as Projective Geometry or Vertigo , changing them only slightly in color and shape, arranging them in a sculptural manner, taking photos, integrating the photo prints as a detail of a larger installation, etc.

This process connects levels of construction, reconstruction and deconstruction in a fluid way. Elements of the reconstruction are not only evident in the fact that Gallmeier repeatedly refers to art history and that many of her works are based on paintings by old masters. The construction and deconstruction of pictorial spaces is particularly evident in the relationship between spatial installation and the (seemingly) two-dimensional visual effect that many works unfold. On the one hand, the work disintegrates as a painting through fragmented levels and elements in space. On the other hand, as an installation, it gains a new pictorial unit through photographic reconstruction and painterly processing, even if this always remains precarious. Many of Gallmeier's works are based on a vanishing point from which the artist constructs the photographic image. According to an interpretation by Stephan Berg , Heike Gallmeier's pictures not only make their construction obvious, they also keep the balance between picture unity and disintegration in suspension.

In addition to her installations, Gallmeier also deals with video works. Among other things, she accompanied the director in Tabea Sternberg in the 40-minute documentary Private Battles . Only the past will tell battles of World War II re-enacted by amateurs in southern England. In addition, Gallmeier has worked as a set designer, z. B. 2016 for Brain Projects of the Rimini Protokoll at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg.

Together with the artists Camilla Dahl , Sabine Groß and Sandra Meisel , Heike Gallmeier initiated the project Der Strich in 2007 , a platform for dealing with clichés of female identity and the art market. Since then, numerous exhibitions and performances have taken place.
