Thomas George "Tom" Hupke (born December 28, 1910 in East Chicago , Indiana , † September 7, 1959 in Detroit , Michigan ) was an American American football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Rams .

career

Tom Hupke studied at the University of Alabama from 1931 to 1933 . There he was also active as an American football player . As was customary at the time, Hupke played both in the offense and in the defense of his team, but mostly found time as a guard . In 1933 he won the SEC championship with his team . That year Tom Hupke was voted All-American . His college recognized him for his athletic performance in all three years of study.

In 1934, Hupke was hired by the Detroit Lions. Hupke was used as a guard in the Lions offense alongside Ox Emerson and in this position had to protect his own blocking back and to block the running back 's way into the opposing end zone . Tailback of the team was the later member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Dutch Clark , who was able to put himself in the limelight again and again through the performance of his own offensive line . In 1935, Hupke was able to move into the NFL championship game with his team . Opponents in the game were the New York Giants , who could be beaten 26: 7. In 1938 Hupke moved to the Cleveland Rams and ended his career after the 1939 season. He served in the United States Navy during World War II . He died in Detroit after a long illness.
