Tom Izzo (born January 30, 1955 ) is an American basketball coach .

Life

Izzo played American football , baseball,  and basketball at Iron Mountain High School, Michigan  . During his student days he played from 1973 to 1977 in the second NCAA division basketball at Northern Michigan University .

As a direct result of his playing career and after obtaining his university degree, Izzo devoted himself to coaching and took on the main responsibility for the student team at Ishpeming High School. In 1979 Izzo moved back to Northern Michigan University and worked there as an assistant coach until 1983. In 1983 he joined Michigan State University as an assistant coach. In this he worked initially until May 1986, changed in the same position to the University of Tulsa , but returned to Michigan State University the following month to work there again as an assistant coach.

In 1995, Izzo succeeded the retiring Jud Heathcote as the Michigan State team's head coach. In the 1999/2000 game year, he led the university team to win the NCAA championship title, and so far they have won the Big Ten title eight times. Notable players Izzo mentored at Michigan State University include Charlie Bell , Mateen Cleaves , Paul Davis , Draymond Green , Gary Harris , Drew Neitzel , Adreian Payne , Morris Peterson , Jason Richardson , Denzel Valentine, and Miles Bridges . In 2016, Izzo was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .

On an international level, Izzo was in charge of the US selection at the Pan American Games in 2003 , and as assistant coach he was on the staff of the American team that took part in the 2001 Goodwill Games .
