Denzel Robert Valentine (born November 16, 1993 in Lansing , Michigan ) is an American basketball player who is currently active for the Chicago Bulls in the North American professional league NBA .

At the end of his studies in 2016, Valentine was recognized by various committees as the best basketball player of the NCAA before he was selected by the Bulls in 14th position in the subsequent NBA Entry Draft .

Career

college

After finishing school at JW Sexton High School in Lansing , Valentine began studying at Michigan State University where his father, Carlton Valentine, had studied and played basketball. From 2012, Denzel Valentine played for four years for the university team Spartans under coach Tom Izzo in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA . During Valentine's student days, the team won the Big Ten Tournament in 2014 and 2016 , with Valentine being honored as the best player of the final tournament when he last won the title, having already been named "Player of the Year" at the Big Ten Conference.

In the national NCAA finals , the Spartans , who last won the title in 2000, were initially able to steadily improve with Valentine. After reaching the last sixteen in Sweet Sixteen 2013, when they were defeated by the Duke Blue Devils , the team failed a year later in the "regional final" of the Elite Eight at the eventual title winner UConn Huskies , before moving into the prestigious Final Four tournament in 2015 . There the team lost again in the semifinals to the later title winner Duke Blue Devils. In the following final round in 2016, the team, including the German Gavin Schilling, was one of the favorites to win the title after winning the Big Ten tournament again, but was defeated in one of the biggest surprises in NCAA history in the opening game of the clearly weaker Blue Raiders from Middle Tennessee State University . He competed with Buddy Hield in the awarding of several awards : Valentine received, in some cases before and afterwards, several individual awards as Player of the Year of the NCAA, for example from the Association of College Basketball Coaches NABC, the Associated Press , NBC Sports and other bodies.

Back in 2015, Valentine was named to the United States' selection for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto . For the first time, the national team consisted of a mixed selection of professionals from overseas such as Bobby Brown and Keith Langford, as well as student players from the NCAA such as Taurean Prince , Malcolm Brogdon and Valentine, but without NBA players. After a preliminary round defeat against eventual title winners Brazil , the team narrowly lost the semi-finals against hosts Canada , before they secured the bronze medal against the Dominican Republic in the "small final" .

NBA

A year later in 2016, after finishing his studies in the NBA Draft , Valentine was selected two places behind Prince in 14th place by the Chicago Bulls . In the 2016/17 game year he played 57 main round games for Chicago and averaged 5.1 points per game. He doubled this value in 2017/18 when he posted 10.2 points per game in 77 NBA appearances. In November 2018, he had to undergo an ankle surgery and therefore missed the entire 2018/19 season.
