Tom Liebscher (born August 3, 1993 in Dresden ) is a German canoeist and Olympic champion .

Career

Liebscher was already successful in the youth field. In 2010 he was runner-up in the four-man kayak at the European Junior Championships and won over 200 meters in a two-man kayak . At the Junior World Championships in 2011, he won three gold medals with a single kayak when he won the 200, 500 and 1000 meters. In 2012 he took part in the U23 European Championships and finished second in the single over 500 meters. In the adult class he won the bronze medal in the single competition over 200 meters at the 2013 European Championships in Montemor-o-Velho . At the world championships in Duisburg , he won the single over 500 meters.

Tom Liebscher has been competing in a two-man kayak with Ronald Rauhe since 2014 after his long-term partner Tim Wieskötter ended his sporting career. At the European Championships in 2014 in Brandenburg an der Havel, the two won over 200 meters, Liebscher also won the single title over 500 meters. In the same year Liebscher and Rauhe took second place at the World Championships in Moscow over 200 meters. At the 2015 European Championships in Račice u Štětí, Rauhe and Liebscher won over 200 meters, Liebscher also won silver in the single over 500 meters. At the European Games in Baku , Rauhe and Liebscher received the silver medal over 200 meters. At the end of the season, the two took sixth place at the World Championships in Milan, Liebscher won the silver medal on the non-Olympic 500 meter course. In 2016 Liebscher won the title over 500 meters at the European Championships in Moscow , over 200 meters Rauhe and Liebscher took third place.

In the 200-meter final of the 2016 Olympic Games , Rauhe and Liebscher took fifth place. On the last day of competition of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the German four-person kayak with Max Rendschmidt , Max Hoff , Tom Liebscher and Marcus Groß won gold on the Olympic 1000-meter distance.

The 1.89 m tall Tom Liebscher starts for the Canoe Club Dresden . He is a sports soldier and studies at the TU Dresden .

Awards

In 2011 Liebscher was elected as the " Elite Student of Sports ".

As a result of his Olympic victory, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf from Federal President Joachim Gauck on November 1, 2016 .
