Max Rendschmidt (born December 12, 1993 in Bonn ) is a German canoeist and Olympic champion .

Career

Rendschmidt was already very successful in the youth field when he started for WSV Blau-Weiß Rheidt . In 2010 he was second in the four-man kayak at the European Junior Championships and third in the single kayak . At the Junior World Championships in 2011 he won the two-man kayak and came second in the one. In 2012 he took part in the U23 European Championships and won the two-man over 1000 meters, over 500 meters he received the bronze medal.

Since 2013, Rendschmidt has been competing in the adult class with Marcus Groß in a two-person kayak. At the 2013 European Championships in Montemor-o-Velho, Rendschmidt and Groß won gold over 500 and 1000 meters. At the world championships in Duisburg , Rendschmidt and Groß won the gold medal over 1000 meters and came fourth over 500 meters. At the 2014 European Championships in Brandenburg an der Havel , the two-man kayak won gold over 1000 meters with Rendschmidt and Groß. At the World Championships in Moscow , the two took fourth place over 500 and 1000 meters. At the 2015 European Championships in Račice u Štětí , the two-man kayak won over 500 and 1000 meters. At the European Games in Baku , Rendschmidt and Groß received the silver medal over 1000 meters. At the 2015 World Championships in Milan, the two won gold over 1000 meters. Groß and Rendschmidt paddled their greatest success to date with the gold medal over 1000 meters at the 2016 Olympic Games . On the last day of competition of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the German four-person kayak with Max Rendschmidt, Max Hoff , Tom Liebscher and Marcus Groß won gold in the 1000-meter distance.

In 2017 , Rendschmidt became world champion in the K4 over the non-Olympic 500-meter course. At the 2018 European Championships in Belgrade , Serbia , he won bronze in K1 over 1000 m and silver in K4 over 500 m. In addition, this year he defended his world title in the four-person kayak over 500 m with Tom Liebscher, Ronald Rauhe and Max Lemke and became vice world champion in K1 over the Olympic 1000 m course.

At the European Games in Minsk in 2019 , he won a silver medal in K4, just like four years earlier, but this time over 500m.

The 1.86 m tall Max Rendschmidt starts for KG Essen . He works for the Federal Police and is stationed at the Federal Police Sports School in Kienbaum .

Awards

For his two Olympic victories, Max Rendschmidt and his teammates received the Silver Laurel Leaf from Federal President Joachim Gauck on November 1, 2016 .

In 2016 and 2017 he received the Felix Award for best athlete in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2015, 2016 and 2018 the canoeist was voted Sportsman of the Year in the General-Anzeiger .

On July 20, 2017, he received the Kienbaum Award from Chancellor Angela Merkel .
