tonair is a four-piece German pop band from the Munich area, founded in 1998 . The genre is English-language pop music .

history

In February 1998 Florian Laske (lead vocals, guitar), Bernd Braun (drums) and Andreas Scheerer (bass, vocals) founded the group tonair . The three knew each other from Aichach , where they all went to school. The oldest of them, Andreas Scheerer, graduated from high school there a year earlier. Originally Florian Laske and Bernd Braun belonged to a band called "The Revits", which had split up in 1997. Andreas Scheerer, who appeared as the bass player in the Aichacher Stadtkapelle, was known to Laske from the school choir. In 2004 the younger brother of Andreas Scheerer, Josua Scheerer (organ, vocals) joined the band.

In the years from 2002 to 2004 numerous concerts took place, including in Munich ( Tollwood Festival , Metropolis, Theatron , Atomic Café , Backstage Culture Center , Substance , near Bayern 3), but also in Hamburg (Markthalle) and in Bilbao, Spain (Bilborock ). In the latter, the band was allowed to travel as a co-winner of the Munich competition “Sprungbrett Popkultur”.

From 2004 to 2005 the group did not appear in England due to singer Florian Laske's long stay. But after his return the band gave numerous concerts again. In winter 2005 the demo CD They Say was recorded.

In 2007 the first single Ride As You Are was published and landed on the 1st place in the editorial and download charts of the Antenne Bayern Soundgarage and was used all over Germany on the radio. In July 2007 they finally appeared at the Dachauer Open Air as the opening act for Boppin'B , Melanie C. and the Scorpions . In collaboration with producer Sami Khatib, the single Pride was also released in 2007 . Numerous radio stations have now noticed the band. Radio appearances on Bayern 3 and KenFM Berlin followed.

The breakthrough came in 2008 with the completion of the album Back in the Nineties . Tonair surprised with this album, which offers not only demanding compositions and charming melodies but also original lyrics. Some critics have stated that contrary to its title, the album sounds more like the sixties. They said tonair, like the Swedish band Mando Diao and some other bands, started to refer to the music of the 1960s. However, this was not the intention of the band. They chose the album title Back in the Nineties because, on the one hand, it was a song on the CD and, on the other hand, they “remembered” the early days of their band, which was in the 1990s. Some of the songs on the album are almost so old that it is basically a "Greatest Hits CD".

After this success, the band shot their first video called Homage to the Dreamer . The tonair song I love you so much more was selected for this . At Christmas 2008 the band released the single A Star So Bright (Merry Christmas) .

Texts

Especially in the more recent works one can see that the texts are gaining more importance. Every now and then poetic representations shimmer through, but they always go hand in hand with simple, obvious explanations. It's often about personal experiences without necessarily being autobiographical. There is always scope for your own interpretations.

I love you so much more is of course a love song, with the protagonist balancing between reality and wishful thinking. Because on the one hand his dream woman has never noticed him, on the other hand he speaks to her directly and courageously, the latter probably happening in his imagination.

Back in the Nineties is about the transience of life and the missed opportunities that one mourns. But even though you change with every second of life, there is always something that connects you to your past. This can of course be perceived as a burden or as a positive fact.

music

Distinctive melody sequences, clear rhythms and melodic singing are characteristic of tonair's music, without having to forego their own style. Further features are short, succinct songs, an often polyphonic choral singing and the unusual instrumentation using an original Hohner case organ. The polyphonic singing is evident in Back in the Nineties , for example, through the Uh choir in the chorus; But this is mostly behind the solo singer. Despite the intellectually demanding lyrics, the music encourages you to sing along, but above all to dance along. The often very fast pace of the songs comes from rock 'n' roll . This is well expressed , for example, in I love you so much more .

Over the years tonair's style began to change. In addition to paying more attention to the lyrics, the music became much more rocky. In the album Back in the Nineties , rocking guitar numbers such as Up in the Trees and Don't are replaced by reserved ballads such as Starting All Over and Ride As You Are .

“More pop than indie, more London than Munich” wrote the Süddeutsche Zeitung about tonair's music.

The band tonair, whose roots are in the blues , is a mixture of pop and alternative indie rock . Since the music sounds a bit British, the band is often compared to Britpop groups like Oasis and Keane , often including the Beatles . However, if you ask singer Florian Laske about his "role models", completely different musicians are mentioned. He admires the voices of the singers from The Cardigans , a Swedish band that was formed in the early 1990s, and the singing of Bob Dylan and Freddie Mercury .

The Regensburger Stadtzeitung reported: "tonair celebrates wonderful, discreet indie pop, infiltrated by the spirit of the Mersey Beat and shaped by the sound of Josua Scheerer's Hohner case organ, which usually causes more cessation than the pleasantly discreet guitars."

Generally one can say that the guitars are subordinate to the song. Andreas Scheerer's bass playing comes across rather straightforward, unadorned. Florian Laskes guitar playing follows similar principles. Mostly he plays rhythm guitar, i. H. the guitar has an accompanying function, whereby he also becomes active as a soloist from time to time and shows that he is rooted in rhythm 'n' blues . Examples of this are at Don't or Start! to find. Although tonair are close to the music of Great Britain, Bernd Braun's drumming is more likely to be described as "American". The British "understatement" drumming is not his, it rather relies on solid skill and effective rhythms and interjections.

The sound of Josua Scheerer's old Hohner Symphonic case organ is of particular importance . It is an electronic, collapsible organ, the design of which was mainly used in numerous beat bands in the mid-1960s. The bright, squeaky sound of the organ gives tonair its very own note. Unlike the Doors , tonair doesn't have any psychedelic organ solos puffed up by drug cocktails, but the Kofferogel stands out particularly well on the first track of the single Pride and Back in the Nineties .

Another specialty of tonair is Florian Laskes crystal clear and high lead voice. The reviews are enthusiastic about his singing. He has a soft voice that comes into its own particularly well with the ballads.

Occur

The quartet is dressed in the style of the 1990s. They wear jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. Her fans like her for her understatement . Tonair it's less about the political attitude than about the music with which they express a part of life.

"You seem relaxed and yet happy, professional, but thrilling." (Süddeutsche Zeitung on the Tollwood Festival performance 2007).

Band name

In an interview, Florian Laske commented on the band name: “The name 'tonair' has no clear meaning. It's a made-up word - the band liked the sound and maybe also the connotations that are in the two syllables. By the way, in the pronunciation chosen by the band, the second syllable is emphasized, which is more of the French pronunciation. "
