Anthony "Tony" Garbelotto (born January 2, 1969 ) is a British basketball coach . Garbelotto worked mainly in his home country as a coach in the British Basketball League . From 2012 to 2014 he was the coach of the German second division club MLP academics Heidelberg in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA .

Career

Garbelotto started a career as a coach comparatively early and in 1992, at the age of 23, became assistant coach at the Towers in London in the British Basketball League (BBL). After two seasons he left this post and in 1997 became assistant in the English men's selection in the same position . A year later he was appointed as the responsible trainer for the U22 junior selection and for 1999 as the trainer of the student selection for the 1999 Summer Universiade .

As a club coach Garbelotto 1998 assumed the position of responsibility at KFI in Icelandic Ísafjörður . With the Icelandic champions from 1996, however, Garbelotto had no title successes and after two years he returned to his home country and took over the Eagles from Newcastle . In the league cup "BBL uni-ball Trophy" they reached the final, which was lost to the Chester Jets . After the end of the following season, Garbelotto moved to the Bullets from Birmingham in 2002 . In the first season they missed the play-offs for the championship on the third from bottom place in the table after the main round , but could at least reach the semi-finals in the league cup. The following season ended catastrophically in last place in the table.

In 2006 Garbelotto took over the newly created BBL franchise London United, which replaced the discontinued towers. The United reached in their debut season just about the play-offs for the championship, in which they were eliminated in the first round. They then withdrew from the BBL and were replaced by London Capital . After the 2012 Olympic Games were awarded in the British capital, London, a British men's national team was re-established in 2006 from the three national teams from Great Britain excluding Northern Ireland . Garbelotto assisted head coach Chris Finch over the next three years , who was able to lead the team into the circle of the best European national teams and lead them for the 2009 European Championship finals . Here, however, they retired early after three defeats in the preliminary round.

Garbelotto had returned to the BBL in 2008 as a club coach and had taken over the Everton Tigers , which had joined the BBL a year earlier. The "BBL Cup" was won in January 2009 with a 103:49 victory over the Plymouth Raiders . After finishing second in the regular season, they reached the play-off final for the championship, which was just lost to Garbelotto's former club Newcastle Eagles. The following season they played a rather mediocre main round, in which they ended up in fifth place, but were able to beat all other teams in the play-offs, including defending champions Newcastle Eagles in the semifinals, and after winning the final over Glasgow Rocks the first Championship for the club. For the following season they separated from the football club Everton and called themselves from then on Mersey Tigers . With the exception of the clearly lost cup final against the Sheffield Sharks in January 2011, they remained victorious in all other BBL competitions in the end and also returned the favor by winning the championship final over the Sharks for the cup defeat they had suffered. Garbelotto was named Trainer of the Year 2011 by the BBL. Subsequently, after financial difficulties, the club was completely rebuilt. The following season 2011/12 dominated the Newcastle Tigers, while the Mersey Tigers missed the play-offs for the championship as the main round penultimate.

For the 2012/13 season Garbelotto was then signed by the German second division club MLP academics from Heidelberg . However, the ProA 2012/13 ended disappointingly when the play-offs for promotion to the top German division were narrowly missed. Heidelberg also missed the play-offs in 2013/2014. In the course of the season analysis it was announced that Garboletto would no longer receive a new contract as head coach for the 2014/2015 season.

From 2014 to 2017 he coached the Saigon Heat team in Vietnam and the country's national team. In August 2017 he took over the coaching position at the British first division club Scottish Rocks  as well as the post of Scottish national coach in a double function. In February 2018, he was dismissed from both offices, and at the same time he resigned as coach of the British national team, a position Garbelotto had also held since September 2017.

In September 2018 he became an advisor to the newly formed team London City Royals . At the end of January 2019, he took up the service as interim coach of the English first division team Worcester Wolves to represent the sick Ty Shaw and remained in office as Shaw was still unable to return to the post in March 2019.
