The Toplitz (also Toplitzbach ) is a river in the Styrian Salzkammergut in Austria .
course
The Toplitz begins at the western end of the Toplitzsee as its only outflow. Your path leads through a wooded valley past the village of Gößl . After 1.6 kilometers it flows into the Grundlsee . After the short source of the Traun at the Kammersee, it forms the second section of the river course, which then leaves the Grundlsee as the Grundlseer Traun .
Renaturation
The firewood for the salt works in Bad Aussee has been transported from the Toplitzsee area via the Toplitz since the 16th century , and its course has been changed more and more. The extensions and straightening were intensified again after the Second World War . This destroyed fish spawning grounds and increased the risk of flooding.
In 2003 and 2004 the Toplitz was renatured again . Through hydraulic engineering measures, including the introduction of stones, roots and tree trunks, the stream was able to find its original bed again by itself. The hermitage at the outlet of the Toplitzsee was made passable for fish by building a ramp.
This enabled the unhindered passage of the fish and thus the genetic exchange between the two lakes to be achieved again. The river is again an important natural rearing water for local fish such as trout , lake trout and aitel . The stone crab could also be reintroduced. The risk of flooding has been reduced.
In the course of the Styrian state exhibition "Fools and Visionaries" in 2005, a path was set up on the banks of the Toplitz, the Toplitzparcours, which was artistically designed by Richard Kriesche and impressively conveyed a connection between nature and art in eight stations.
