Totora is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Totora is the central place of the canton Totora in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) San Pedro de Totora and the administrative seat of the province San Pedro de Totora . The village is located at an altitude of 4023  m on the upper reaches of the Río Totora, on the western slope of the Serranía de Huayllamarca , an approximately 100 kilometers long ridge that extends on the Altiplano in a north-west-south-east direction.

Totora is located in the Bolivian highlands between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The region has a typical daytime climate in which the mean daytime temperatures fluctuate more strongly than the mean seasonal temperature fluctuations.

Totora is 188 kilometers by road from La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 2 leads to El Alto , from there Ruta 1 in a southerly direction as an asphalt road to Patacamaya , then Ruta 4 in a south-westerly direction to Cañaviri . From there, an unpaved road leads south via Umala to Chilahuala , where it crosses the Río Desaguadero until it reaches San Pedro de Curahuara after 60 kilometers . From there, the piste leads a further 28 kilometers in a south-westerly direction to Totora .
