Transatlantic sailing records

Banque Populaire V , current record holder of multihull yachts

Since Christopher Columbus' five-week sailing voyage in 1492, during which he quickly and safely crossed the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and America, it has always been an important goal to follow suit.

Today it has become a classic route for sailing yacht skippers . Holding the transatlantic record in sailing is very prestigious, only topped by winning the Jules Verne Trophy , for which it is a good preparation.

The record can be reached in two directions: from west to east or from east to west. The record is rated in the categories of one-hand yacht or crew yacht with the further distinction between monohull yacht ( English monohull ) and multihull yacht ( English multihull ). The record performances have been monitored by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WWSSRC) since 1972 .

Transatlantic from west to east

This route is the fastest as it follows the prevailing westerly winds. This route is of the greatest interest among skippers. The Atlantic crossing begins at the Ambrose Light beacon , east of the Sandy Hook peninsula , south of New York Bay, to an imaginary line that can be drawn from Lizard Point (Cornwall) (England) to Ouessant (France). The distance is approximately 2,880 nautical miles (5334 km).
