Francis Joyon (born May 28, 1956 in Hanches , Département Eure-et-Loir , France ) is a French high seas regatta - and record sailor. Among other things, he won the renowned one-handed transatlantic regatta OSTAR in 2000 and the Fastnet race in 2001 .

In 2004 Joyon circled the world as a single-handed sailor - second after Nigel Tetley - on a multihull boat , the Trimaran Idec , and set several single-handed speed records in the process. Four years later he broke world records again in an even faster one-handed circumnavigation on the same boat. In 2016/2017, Joyon and a five-person crew set a new record for the fastest circumnavigation of the world with almost 41 days of sailing on the Idec .

In 2008 Joyon was named Sailor of the Year ( marin de l'année ) by the French Association of Sailors , the Fédération française de voile .

Life

Joyon learned to sail when he was an 18-year-old volunteer helping to maintain the boats and other equipment at the French sailing school Les Glénans . As a result, he also learned at other sailing schools and eventually gained access to ocean regattas. When he found the unused hulls of the Elf Aquitaine catamaran in the port of La Trinité-sur-Mer , in which there are often larger boats used by ocean-going sailors , he built his own boat out of it.

As the professionalization of offshore regattas increased and demanded more and more marketing from the sailors, Joyon said he was looking for a niche to continue (only) focusing on sailing, even if he then received less sponsorship money. In 1996, Joyon led the renowned one-handed transatlantic regatta OSTAR ( The Europe 1 STAR ) with a margin of 24 hours until his trimaran Banque Populaire capsized off Nova Scotia . Joyon won the next edition of the regatta ( The Europe 1 New Man STAR ) in 2000. A year later, he won the Fastnet race in 2001.

In the following years Joyon turned mainly to the one-hand records on maxi trimarans. On Idec (ex- Sport Elec , designed for six to seven people), he circumnavigated the world in 72 days in 2004, setting a new record (see below ). On July 6, 2005, Joyon beat the 11-year-old North Atlantic record for a one-hand crossing with just over six days of sailing. A day later, one-handed on his way back to Brittany, he drove asleep under autopilot onto the rocks of the Pointe de Penmarch ; Idec suffered a total write-off, Joyon escaped unscathed.

When Ellen MacArthur undercut Joyon's circumnavigation in 2006, Joyon - on the Idec 2 launched in 2007 - again circumnavigated the world alone in 2008 and reduced the best time for single-handed sailors to under 58 days.

In 2016/2017, Joyon circled the world with a five-person crew at Idec in 40 days, 23 hours and 30 minutes. He undercut Loïck Peyron's record, which has been in effect since 2012, by almost five days and thus won the Jules Verne Trophy for the fastest circumnavigation of the world from and to an imaginary line between Ouessant and The Lizard .

Boats

For several years now, Joyon has been sailing its records, especially on boats called Idec or IDEC , named after its sponsor, the Japanese company IDEC :

  • Idec (1) (ex- Poulain , ex- Un autre regard , ex- Charal , ex- Lyonnaise des eaux-Dumez , ex- Sport-Elec ): built in 1985, originally 75 feet (22.7 meters) long trimaran Poulain , with whom Olivier de Kersausan undertakes regattas and record drives under his various names; various modifications over the years; 2003–2005 under Joyon as a 90 foot (27.4 meter) long Idec ; destroyed on July 7, 2005 at the Pointe de Penmarc'h
  • Idec 2 : built in 2007 for Joyon; Sold in 2015 to the Chinese sailor Guo Chuan and renamed Qingdao China , on a record attempt across the Pacific, Guo enlisted on October 25, 2016, the Qingdao China was found after two days without a driver, but was initially allowed to drift and finally to Honolulu on November 21 brought
  • Idec Sport (ex- Groupama 3 under Franck Cammas , ex- Banque Populaire VII , ex- Lending Club 2 , ex- IDEC 3 ): Launched 2006; handed over to the Idec Sport team for Joyon in September 2015
