Ruta del Descubrimiento

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ruta del Descubrimiento ( Spanish for route of discovery ; in French, more rarely also "Transat Espagnole": Spanish transatlantic regatta ) was one every four years between 1984 and 1992 - d. H. a total of three non-stop sailing regatta from southern Spain to the Dominican Republic and then to Miami (USA) in 1992 . The prescribed route required the circumnavigation of Gran Canaria and for multihull boats also the circumnavigation of San Salvador (Bahamas) . The competition was the first Spanish transatlantic regatta and its length, route and name are based on Columbus' voyages of discovery in 1492.

Well-known sailors and ultra-modern boats were among the participants in the regatta. Both in 1984 and 1988, speed records for Atlantic crossings in east-west direction were set as part of the regatta. Even today, the section from Cádiz around Gran Canaria to San Salvador is used for transatlantic records (east-west) and is called the "Route de la découverte" ( French for route of discovery ) by the French who dominate this area . It is the counterpart to the North Atlantic west-east route between New York ( Ambrose lighthouse ) and the English Lizard Point .

The class for the large multihull boats - d. H. the fastest participating boats - was influenced by French in 1984 and 1988, when the winner and the second and third place (as well as other sailors in the front places) came from France. In 1992, however, the regatta took place without French participation.

Route of Discovery: Course records

Starting with the regatta, record times for the fastest east-west transatlantic crossing - the "Route of Discovery" or the route from Cádiz via Gran Canaria to San Salvador (Bahamas) - were continued. Even after the regatta is abandoned, the best times will continue to improve. After 2000, Steve Fossett's Playstation , Franck Cammas ' Groupama 3 and Pascal Bidégorry's Banque Populaire V (unsuccessful in 2009), some of the fastest long-distance sailing teams in the world at the moment, struggled for the record.

  • 1984: Philippe Poupon (France) on the 26 m catamaran Fleury Michon III (12 days 21 hours 21 minutes 17 seconds)
  • 1988: Serge Madec (France) on the catamaran Jet Services V (12 days, 12 hours 30 minutes, 27 seconds)
  • 2000: Grant Dalton (New Zealand; with the French Bruno Peyron and Franck Proffit ) on the Catamaran Club Med (later 10 days 14 hours 53 minutes 44 seconds)
  • 2003: Steve Fossett (USA) on the PlayStation catamaran (9 days, 13 hours 30 minutes 18 seconds)
