Computer aided translation
A computer-assisted translation (English computer-aided translation , including computer-assisted translation , abbreviated CAT ) is conducted by human translation of language with the help of computer programs .
Components
CAT systems usually consist of the following sub-systems:
- Translation memory system
- Terminology database
- Conversion programs for connection to word processing and desktop publishing programs
- Alignment tools with which existing translations (source and target texts that belong together) can be entered into the translation memory
- Project management / workflow components
Computer-aided translation versus machine translation
Programs for computer-aided translation do not translate themselves, but support the human translator (the so-called "human translator") in their work. In contrast, machine translation is done automatically without the need for a human translator.
However, mixed forms are possible in which a machine translation is checked and completed by a human translator.
advantages
In addition to improved text consistency, the use of customer-specific or industry-specific terminology as well as shorter delivery times, cost reductions and better cost control are mentioned.
