Gerrits mainly participated in the Nor-Am Cup from 2007 to 2011. He won his only cup competition in Apex in December 2010 and took second place in the overall Aerials ranking in the 2009/10 season. He made his debut in the World Cup in January 2008 in Mont Gabriel and achieved 22nd place. Three years later he reached his first top ten placement in the World Cup with tenth place in Mont Gabriel. At the subsequent Freestyle Skiing World Championships 2011 in Park City , he was sixth. In the 2012/13 season he achieved his first podium finishes in the World Cup with second places in Val Saint Come and Deer Valley . He won the silver medal at the 2013 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Voss . He finished the season in fifth place in the Aerials World Cup. At the beginning of the following season he won his first World Cup victory in Beijing . He finished seventh in his first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 . As in the previous year, he came fifth in the Aerials World Cup. At the Freestyle Skiing World Championships 2015 on Kreischberg he achieved 12th place and at the Freestyle Skiing World Championships 2017 in Sierra Nevada he came 19th. In March 2017 he became Canadian champion in the aerials discipline.
Gerrits has taken part in 45 World Cups so far and made it into the top ten 15 times (as of the end of the 2016/17 season).
