The Tribhuvan International Airport ( TIA , IATA : KTM , ICAO : VNKT ) ( nepali : त्रिभुवन अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय विमानस्थल) in Kathmandu is Nepal's only international airport . With the exception of Istanbul, there are only connections with Asian destinations. Connections from many Middle Eastern airlines and Air India connect the TIA to Europe.

history

In August 2013, the airport's only runway had to be closed indefinitely to wide-body aircraft because the dilapidated runway could no longer withstand their weight. International flights from Europe were resumed in early 2014.

Incidents

  • On May 10, 1973, a Douglas DC-8-30 of Thai Airways International ( aircraft registration HS-TGU ) had an accident while landing at Kathmandu Airport. After touching down late, it overshot the end of the runway, killing a person on the ground. The plane was destroyed.
  • On July 31, 1992, the pilots of an Airbus A310-300 from Thai Airways (HS-TID) had to abort the approach to Kathmandu airport after a malfunction of the landing flaps , which are absolutely necessary for this airport, occurred. When the disruption could be rectified, a few flight maneuvers were necessary for a new approach in the mountainous terrain. Due to inadequate communication with air traffic control and the following navigation errors, the machine crashed into a mountain, killing all 113 occupants, 99 passengers and 14 crew members. The cause of the accident was a controlled flight into terrain (CFIT). This was the first total loss of an Airbus A310 (see also Thai Airways flight 311 ) .
  • On July 7, 1999, a Boeing 727-243 (F) of Hinduja Cargo Services (VT-LCI) was flown five minutes after take-off from Kathmandu airport into a chain of hills about 15 kilometers south of the departure airport and was completely destroyed. After taking off, the aircraft on Lufthansa Flight 8533, which was operated on behalf of Lufthansa Cargo , rose insufficiently in a curve that was too flat and collided with the terrain at an altitude of 7,550 feet. All five crew members were killed. The main causes were the not reaching the departure procedure, the defective briefing by the captain, insufficient coordination within the cockpit crew and much too slow response to the repeated warnings of the ground proximity warning system (ground proximity warning system) (see also Lufthansa Cargo Flight 8533 ) .
  • On September 25, 2011, after a flight over the Himalayas , a Beechcraft 1900 the Buddha Air (9N-AEK) flying against a hill just before landing at the airport Kathmandu. At the time of the crash, the clouds were low. All 16 passengers and 3 crew members were killed.
  • On September 28, 2012, a Dornier 228-200 operated by Sita Air (9N-AHA) crashed on the flight to Lukla after take-off about 500 meters from Kathmandu Airport. All 19 occupants died in the accident. A loss of thrust unnoticed by the pilots led to a loss of control and a crash.
  • On March 4, 2015, an Airbus A330-300 on Turkish Airlines Flight 726 came to a halt next to the runway when landing at Kathmandu Airport. None of the 224 passengers and crew members were injured. Since Nepal lacked the appropriate evacuation equipment and this had to be brought from India, Kathmandu airport was closed for 72 hours. The aircraft had to be written off and was converted into a museum in 2017.
