Trinity Church

The Trinitatiskirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Neuendorf b. Elmshorn . The towerless brick building was built on an old dike line. With its steep roof and ridge turret, it protrudes over the surroundings and is visible from afar in the flat marshland .

Building

It is a brick building with origins from the 16th century. The nave, which was subsequently extended to the west, has a polygonal choir closure and is covered by a high tiled roof with a full hip on the west side. The ogival, relatively large windows of the ship are all uniform. A brick support divides them in the middle. The main portal is on the north side. It is ogival and triple stepped with inlaid dewsticks . Three ogival blind niches above also show the tau framing. The stepped west portal is a little simpler.

On the roof there is a six-sided roof turret with a Welscher hood , gold-plated ball and weather valve. The shaft and roof surface are clad in slate . The hour bell is located in the white painted hatch floor.

Interior and outfit

Inside the large hall building is vaulted by a wooden barrel, in a narrow western piece the simple beamed ceiling is still present. Tie bars connect the vault approaches. The interior is largely baroque with large galleries and boxes .

Altarpiece

The altarpiece (retable) shows eight relief scenes and nine individual figures. The carver Tönnies Heidtmann created it in 1656, the painting comes from Peter Thode from Itzehoe. On the predella is Supper scene represented. The main floor shows the crucifixion in the middle, two scenes from the passion of Jesus on each side . On the left are scenes on the Mount of Olives and Christ before Pilate , on the right Christ before Caiaphas and the Lamentation . On the upper floor you can see the Resurrection and in the curved gable the Last Judgment . Free columns and individual figures flank the main and upper floors. The four evangelists , Moses , John the Baptist , Adam and Eve and, as the upper end, the world judges are shown.

Sacrament pews

Two oak benches for the Last Supper are decorated with arcades as a bas-relief. They date from the first half of the 17th century.

Baptism angel

The baptismal angel from 1787, floating with outspread wings, carries a pewter bowl on a cross. A dove is depicted on the lid of the baptismal bowl. The figure comes from Hans Holtemeyer in Wewelsfleth, the baptismal bowl from a jug maker from Glückstadt.

pulpit

The pulpit was donated in 1636 by estate manager Hans Horst. A profiled support carries the polygonal pulpit. Reliefs of birth, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension can be seen in its fields . The sound cover shows the four evangelists.

Organ gallery and organ

The organ gallery on the north side rests on slender iron supports. On both sides are the gallery boxes, in the middle the five-part organ prospectus above a baluster balustrade swinging forward like a balcony . The closed galleries are equipped with lattice windows and structured by pilasters . They wear rocailles above the profiled cornice . The parapets show rococo paintings with scenes from the Old Testament.

organ

The organ was made by Johann Matthias Schreiber from Glückstadt in 1756. The slider chests -instrument has 21 registers on two manual stations and pedal . The game action and stop action are mechanical. The rococo prospectus has three polygonal pipe towers and two smaller two-story flat fields. Technical damage occurred due to unfavorable indoor climate conditions, so that a comprehensive restoration was necessary. The work carried out by the Dutch company Flentrup Orgelbau was completed in 2016.

Building history

Construction, destruction, reconstruction and remodeling by 1800

Inaugurated for the Trinity Festival in 1504, the Neuendorfer Church was initially named "The Heylig Dreyfaltigkeits Kirche". The original structure was smaller than the current church and it was given a bell tower in 1571.

In 1627 imperial troops burned down the church and tower during the Thirty Years' War when they approached Glückstadt Fortress. The reconstruction only took place two years later, when the population who had fled to Hamburg returned to Neuendorf. However, the tower was not rebuilt, but replaced by a belfry .

In 1722, the decision was made to tear down the ailing west wall and to expand the building to the west over the previous belfry. The bell was then hung in the church floor.

In connection with the installation of a Schreiber organ, further alterations were made in the middle of the 18th century: a wall was broken through on the north side and an organ staircase and an organ gallery were created.

The last significant redesign was the construction of the ridge turret with clock and hour bell in 1765.

Recent restorations

A report from 1988 led to the extensive restoration of the south, east and north façades, a measure that could only be completed in 1997. Most of the masonry had to be renewed. The monastery -sized bricks and shaped bricks used for this came from the Brickworks Blomesche Wildnis , small-format bricks from demolitions of old houses.

Further restoration work:

  • 1962 Relocation of the pulpit, renewal of the floor, new color scheme
  • 1980 Renewal of the west gable with stones in the monastery format
  • 1985 restoration of the cast iron church gate
  • 1995 restoration of paintings
  • 1999 Installation of a new master clock and repair of the bell
  • 1999–2000 restoration of the altar
  • 2001–2002 renovation of the roof structure and new covering of the roof, new gold plating of the ball and weather valve
  • 2016 (completion) restoration of the organ
