The Vermuntbahn is a cable car in the Montafon in Vorarlberg . It leads from Partenen to the Trominier mountain station . The maintenance staircase, now called Europatreppe 4000 , runs parallel to the cable car, which replaces an old inclined elevator for the construction of the uppermost Ill power plants in Upper Montafon .

location

The Vermuntbahn runs directly from the Vermuntwerk on the other side of the Ill in Partenen (valley station  1038  m above sea level   ) to Trominier ( 1731  m above sea level ) above the village of Gufelgut , on Breitfieler Berg  ( 2415  m above sea level ), the final summit of the Hochmaderergrat of the Silvretta.

From there, a winter-safe former construction road leads through a tunnel, the Vermunt gallery , to the Vermuntsee through Hell  ( ) and meets the Silvretta High Alpine Road again below the dam wall of the lake .

Partenen – Trominier inclined elevator

For the construction of the power plants on the uppermost Ill , the Illwerke built the Vermunt plant (Vermunt dam of the Vermunt reservoir , Vermunt – Trominier pressure tunnel, Trominier water lock, Trominier – Partenen penstock), several funiculars and inclined lifts . The inclined elevator Partenen – Trominier was supposed to bridge the not winter-safe passage of the Silvrettastraße (today Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße) with a direct ascent of 700 meters. The elevator ran right next to the drop pressure line to the Vermunt power house in Partenen.

The system was completed as early as 1928 and was in operation after the high-rise construction site and the commissioning of the Vermunt power plant in 1930 for maintenance purposes (maintenance work, operational monitoring and landscape maintenance tasks) and the construction of the Silvretta reservoir (1938–1951).

Surprised by the tourist appeal of the facilities themselves, the Illwerke opened the elevator to public transport in 1959.

In 1994, when the plant's power descent had to be renewed, the more than 65-year-old, decrepit elevator was demolished and replaced by a modern aerial tramway. The maintenance stairs remain.

In 1994 a modern cable car, the Vermuntbahn , was built. The name had already established itself for the old inclined elevator.

In addition to the operational tasks and the public transport to the Mittelilvretta, the Illwerke, which at that time were already working intensively on the touristic use of the power plant group, also planned to attract the public. It is operated by the Golm Silvretta Lünersee Tourismus subsidiary .

This is why the cable car, which uses the old inclined lift route and thus did not require any changes to the landscape, has a swap suspension system so that it can be used either as a material cable car or for passenger transport: Long goods up to 9 m long (for the pressure pipelines) can be used as well Construction containers up to 6 × 3 × 2.5 m can be transported, an electric hoist (6 t payload) was installed for cement containers and bucket wagons.

A cabin for 50 people is available for visitors to the Bielerhöhe in winter for the transport of people and the delivery of the then open accommodation providers in the Bielerhöhe area .

Europe staircase 4000

Europe just longest stairway, originally built as access of the inclined elevator (valley station  1048  m above sea level. A.   ) leads over the full 700 meters of altitude and inclination of up to 86 percent along the former inclined lift-route to the mountain station of Vermuntbahn. The approximately 4000 steps - according to the marking on the stairs exactly 3609 - are also of different heights and lengths.

The current record of running stairs from 2007 is 20 minutes and 28 seconds.

The tunnel, which connects the mountain station Trominier about hell with the Silvrettastraße ( 1731  m above sea level. A.   ), is still used as a driveway.

The tunnel was built between 1926 and 1930, is 950 m long and has window galleries. There were four smaller tunnels ( Breitfieler, Nasen, S and Kopfstollen ), the open stretches in between were partially protected by avalanche galleries.

In the early days, the Höhenbahn track system ran through the tunnel , with which all material and personnel from the Partenen – Trominier inclined elevator was transported on. It had a length of 2630 m, of which 1440 m or 55% was a tunnel.

In 1974 the Höhenbahn was dismantled. The new Schnausa tunnel was also driven, otherwise the old tunnels were renovated and the route of the now high-altitude path Trominier – Vermunt paved. Only special vehicles can pass on the narrow route.

Since there is hardly any traffic in the summer when the Silvretta High Alpine Road is open, the tunnels and galleries were set up as exhibition galleries over 1.5 km. Here the areas of water and the history of hydropower are documented with numerous illustrative material. In particular, it is intended to provide an understanding of the purpose, functioning and the integration of a modern pumped storage plant such as the Obere Ill-Lünersee power plant group into an alpine living and natural area such as the Montafon. In addition, the Schnausa tunnel is also designed as an exhibition space for art projects, currently for example works that have been created by young people in cooperation with the Montafon Art Forum on the subject of water. Accompanying exhibitions are also held in the energie.raum information center in Partenen (Vallülasaal). The project manager was Kurt Berger (St. Pölten), who had already worked with Andre Heller.

In addition to pedestrians, the entire exhibition is also specifically designed for bikers who can “take” the tunnel with them on a tour.

Due to the new power descent of the Vermuntwerk, the locking chamber was also taken out of operation (the new apparatus chamber has a throttle valve suitable for emergency shutdown). The old lock chamber was moving all of the history of technology obtained remarkable conclusion organs in their original state and as a technology museum old lock chamber Trominier  ( 1731  m above sea level. Pipe strings with double flaps including air valves, drives, filling and emptying slides, electromotive valve drive and manually operated emergency drive (tunnel side) and automatic self-closing valves with weight drive (valley side) based on the state of power plant technology of the mid-20th century have been preserved.

Directions, access, paths and tours

Public transport runs from Bludenz (Westbahn Arlberg – Rheintal) with the Montafonerbahn to Schruns and bus to Partenen (network tariff ). The Vermuntbahn can be reached by road on Montafonerstraße  (L 188), in summer also from the Tyrolean side from Paznaun . The valley station is in the center of the village by the illwerke vkw Vermuntwerk.

The Höhenweg leads from Trominier to Lake Vermunt. The Vermuntbahn mountain station is also the starting point for the mountain bike high-altitude tour Silvretta-Bike-Safari (Vermuntsee, Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße, Bielerhöhe).

Winter closure is imposed on Silvrettastraße , but the Silvretta – Bielerhöhe ski and touring area remains accessible with the Vermuntbahn Partenen – Trominier, and from there with the shuttle bus through the tunnel and across Lake Vermunt.

The Golm Silvretta Lünersee Tourismus GmbH offers for ski lifts and shuttle bus in the summer the Montafon Silvretta Card , in winter, the experience Silvretta Bielerhöhe ticket to, for nearby attractions and admission is free.
