Tsingtao ( Chinese 青島啤酒 / 青岛啤酒 , Pinyin Qīngdǎo Píjiǔ ) is a brewery founded in 1903 from the former German colonial city of Tsingtau (today's Pinyin inscription: Qīngdǎo ) in the People's Republic of China .

Tsingtao is one of the two largest breweries in China and one of the top 10 worldwide. The beer produced there is exported to more than 100 countries.

history

The brewery was founded in 1903 by German settlers as the Germania brewery in Kiautschou . The company was also maintained during the First and Second World War and the time of the Japanese occupation.

The spelling Tsingtao is special because the official description of the place name is Qingdao . On the other hand, the old German place name was not taken over directly, because it was Tsingtau .

In 1949 the brewery was nationalized and privatized again in the 1990s.

Tsingtao was introduced to the US market in 1972 and has been the top-selling Chinese beer in the US ever since . On July 15, 1993, the company went public in Hong Kong . Tsingtao is exported to over 50 countries worldwide. This means that Tsingtao's share of Chinese beer exports is around 50%. In 2016, the company brewed around 79.2 million hectoliters of beer in 62 of its own breweries. Two other breweries are operated as a joint venture .

Tsingtao's market share in China is around 17% (2019).

Tsingtao is the second largest brewery in the People's Republic of China . In 2016 it was the 6th largest brewery in the world.

There are around 60 brewery locations in China.

Shareholder structure

In January 2009 Anheuser-Busch InBev sold its 19.9% stake in Tsingtao to the Japanese brewery Asahi . Asahi is thus the second largest shareholder in the Tsingtao brewery with a total share of 31%. Anheuser-Busch InBev retains a minority stake of 7%. In 2017, Asahi still held a share of 19.9%. Asahi sold this stake to the Chinese Fosun Group in December 2017 .
