Surname

Tugstein is a term that occurs several times in Vorarlberg. According to Johann Christoph Adelung's grammatical-critical dictionary of the High German dialect , Tof is the name for “ a chalk-like, very porous type of stone, which resembles a petrified sponge and generally contains many remains of shellfish. In a wider sense, every type of porous stone, even if it is sand-like, is called tof stone ”. Other names are: Tuf , Tufstein , Duft , Duftstein , Tugstein , Tuchsstein , Duckstein . In Latin for Pliny and Vitruvius Tophus or Tofus would be used, in French : Tuf . According to Adelung, Tof is said to be " an old European word that is related to the Latin in the sidelines, but not derived from it ".

The mountain parcel and settlement has the name of the tufa limestone deposits located here.

Topography, geography, location and traffic

Tugstein lies below the settlement / parcel of Reute and above the settlement of Sägen. In " Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ", 1839, Tugstein was mentioned as an independent hamlet and part of Hohenems. Also in the " Provinzial-Handbuch von Tirol und Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ". In the general national calendar for Tyrol and Vorarlberg (1825), Tugstein is listed as a separate village.

Craft, trade

The tufa limestone found in Tugstein was intensively mined in the past, despite its difficult use in terms of structural engineering (the rock could absorb strong water). In contrast to the occurrence of tufa in Lingenau , the occurrence in Tugstein is not protected as a natural monument.

Tugstein has not developed any significant commercial infrastructure. Agriculture still dominates today.
