Tullia Socin
Tullia Socin (born January 7, 1907 in Bolzano ; † January 20, 1995 there ) was an Italian painter .
Life
The Tullia Socin family had lived in Bolzano since 1870. Her grandfather was the musical instrument manufacturer Fidel Socin, who founded the "Fidel Socin" company for accordion and musical instruments in Bolzano in 1871. He died on February 5, 1917 at the age of 77 in Bozen, where he was also buried.
After primary school at the local Marian boarding school, Tullia attended the Notre Dame de Sion reformatory in Trento in 1919 . In 1924 she obtained a diploma in French language and literature at the University of Grenoble . She then studied from 1925 to 1932 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice with Vigilio Guidi.
After becoming an academic painter, she continued her education in this sector (Paris 1933, Rome 1934). She took part in several competitions and exhibitions and won first prizes at the fascist trade union biennials in Bolzano and Trento in 1932, 1937 and 1939. During her stays in Bolzano, she sought contact with the local artists Hans Piffrader and Ignaz Gabloner . When the Second World War broke out, she withdrew to Castelrotto and the Non Valley .
In 1943 Tullia Socin married the sculptor Enrico Carmassi, with whom she lived in Turin from 1946 to 1974 . During this time she had several exhibitions, including in La Spezia , Ivrea , Turin, St. Vincent , Munich , Vienna and in 1965 in the chapter house of the Dominican Church in Bozen. After the death of her husband in 1975, she returned to Bolzano.

The artist's sister, Maria Pia Socin, collected a large number of works by Tullia Socin and Enrico Carmassi, and made inventory lists. After her death in 2009, this estate was transferred to a foundation, from whose holdings a room in the Bolzano City Museum will be available for exhibition purposes from 2011 . Work is currently underway on the scientific cataloging of the Foundation's holdings.
Socin’s paintings from the 1930s are representational, with figurative images and portraits dominating. During the time of fascism , several time-related images were created, such as the youth of Mussolini's time , the wounded legionnaire (1937), young Italian women (1937) or the commemorative medal (1939), whereby Socin, for example with the legionnaire , painted over the fascist motifs after 1945. After the war, based on post-cubism, she also found freer, abstract representations.
