Tulse Hill is a suburb of the Lambeth district of London . It is south of Brixton . To the west is Brixton Hill and to the south is West Norwood . In the east the district borders on West Dulwich .

history

Originally, today's urban area of Tulse Hill was divided into the Bodley , Upgroves and Scarlettes estates , the exact boundaries of which can no longer be traced today. The name of the place is derived from the Tules family, who acquired lands in this area around 1650, at the time of the Commonwealth of England . Sir Henry Tulse was Lord Mayor of London in 1638 . His daughter Elizabeth married on August 31, 1676 Richard Onslow, 1st Baron Onslow and committed end of 1718 suicide , having previously suffered a long time from depression. The family owned the land until 1789 when much of it was bought by William Cole. After his death in 1807, the land was divided among his heirs. The western part of the area fell to Mercy Cressingham, whose husband Thomas Edwards expanded the property further to provide access to Brixton Hill . While Tulse Hill Farm was the only building in the area around Brixton Hill in 1810, a map from 1821, now in the library of the Royal Institute of British Architects , shows the first plans to develop the area with real estate. While the surrounding cities such as Brixton, West Norwood and Dulwich developed rapidly in the years to come, there were still very few houses in the Tulse Hill area in 1832. By 1843, however, this changed fundamentally and numerous new houses were built. Today Cressingham Gardens is located in this area . Richard Ogbourne originally inherited the eastern part of today's urban area, but he immediately sold it to John Blades. The development of this part was delayed with the construction of the Trinity Rise road until 1845. The Holy Trinity Church was built between 1855 and 1856 and is now a listed building . It was only with the opening of the Tulse Hill Railway Station in 1868 that this area also became interesting for residential construction.

Holy Trinity Church

The original development with villas with their large parks had to give way for the most part to social housing projects in the 1930s . One of the 19th century houses that still stands today is Berry House , also known as Silwood Hall , which is now part of St Martin-In-The-Fields High School for Girls .

After the Second World War , two new schools were built in the city, the Tulse Hill School , whose students included Ken Livingstone , and the Dick Sheppard School . Today both schools are closed and the buildings no longer exist. Brockwell Gate , a gated community overlooking Brockwell Park, was built on the grounds of the Dick Sheppard School . In contrast, the grounds of the Tulse Hill School were used to build simpler houses and apartments.

traffic

At the southern border of the urban area, the A 204, A 205 and A 215 form a junction that is one of the most important traffic junctions in the wider area. Tulse Hill is connected to the London Buses network via lines 2, 68, 196, 201, 332, 432, 415, 468 and P13 . The Tulse Hill Railway Station provides another connection to local public transport . From here trains run by Govia Thameslink Railway under the brands Southern and Thameslink , which connect the district to London Bridge station in 18 minutes . The closest London Underground station is Brixton Station . It is about three kilometers from the center of Tulse Hills and is on the Victoria Line .

The Tulse Hill Hotel , now used as a pub , was built in 1840 and is located on Norwood Road. The building of the beach School , an elementary school, which is run as Elm Court School today was built 1,902th Her students included actor Tim Roth , natural scientist James Lovelock and Jeremy Spencer , co-founder of the band Fleetwood Mac .
