The Tune ship is the archaeological find of a ship's grave from the Viking Age (800-1050 AD) in Norway . It was discovered in 1867 in the Båthaugen burial mound in Rolvsøy (now part of Fredrikstad ), Viken province , and uncovered by the archaeologist and historian Oluf Rygh (1833–1899).

The Viking ship , of which only fragments have been preserved, was built according to dendrochronological determination around 890 AD and around 900 served the burial of a probably noble Viking. Due to an ancient grave looting , no skeletal remains and only a few of the grave goods common to Viking princes could be discovered. In similar finds of Viking ship burials, e.g. B. the Ladby ship or the Gokstad ship , horses, dogs, weapons, jewelry and tableware could be recovered or proven.

The open wooden boat was about 22 m long and 4.35 m wide, the length of the keel was around 14 m. It was smaller than the longships of the Vikings and of the karfi type (see article Viking ship ), which was only sailed occasionally. Above the out -grown ribs timbered and clinker eichenbeplankten hull with wide thwarts and crossbars a massive was gunwale . Rowers operated eleven or twelve pairs of oars on fast coastal voyages ; due to the low freeboard , however, the ship was hardly suitable for the sea. Apart from the base of the mast , no evidence of the rig or a former sails have been preserved.

The preserved remains of the Tune ship are exhibited in the Viking Ship Museum in Bygdøy , Oslo , which also houses the Gokstad ship and the Oseberg ship .
