Tyler Wayne Skaggs (born July 13, 1991 in Woodland Hills , California - † July 1, 2019 in Southlake , Texas ) was an American baseball player who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels was active. The Los Angeles Angels selected Tyler Skaggs in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft . In 2010 he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he made his MLB debut in 2012. Prior to the 2014 season , he was traded back to the Angels, with whom he played until his death in 2019.

Career

After the Angels had selected Skaggs as the 40th pick in the 2009 MLB Draft , he made his rookie minor league debut with the Arizona Angels. In 2010 he worked for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the Midwest League, for which he was also elected to the All-Star Team. The Angels traded Skaggs in July 2010 to the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he was active at the AAA level with the South Bend Silver Hawks until the end of the season . In 2011 missions for the Visalia Rawhide and Mobile Bay Bears followed. Tyler Skaggs made his MLB debut on August 22, 2012, pitching 6 1/3 innings and achieving his first and only win this season. In the following year he started in seven games and ended the season with a record of 2: 3.

In December 2013, the D'backs traded back to the Angels, where he hit a 5-5 record in 18 games and ended the season with an ERA of 4.30.

During the 2014 season, Skaggs had to undergo a Tommy John Surgery and was then out of the 2016 season . In 2017 he only made 16 starts due to an injury and spent a good three months on the disabled list.

The season 2018 ended Skaggs with an ERA of 2.64 in 16 starts, in which he again even if only temporarily, failed, due to an adductor problem. Season in 2019 he was again sidelined early in the season part of the starting rotation but had again after three inserts injured. In total, Skaggs had 15 starts, in which he could record seven wins. At the time of his death, he had a record of 28 wins, 38 losses, an ERA of 4.41 and posted 476 strikeouts.

On July 1, 2019, Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in Southlake, Texas, where the Angels were billeted as part of an away game with the Houston Astros. An autopsy revealed that Skaggs aspirated his vomit and choked on it. He was under the influence of fentanyl , oxycodone and alcohol at the time of death . As a result of the investigation, a suicide was excluded and his death was rated as an accident. As a result, Skagg's family hired a lawyer to investigate the cause of death because they questioned the autopsy report. In this context, an employee of the Angels admitted to having provided the oxycodone to Skaggs.

Honors

At the first home game after Skagg's death, all Angels players wore a number 45 jersey.Patrick Corbin of the Washington Nationals wore Skaggs jersey number 45 in a game against the Miami Marlins . During the 2019 All-Star Game , Angels representatives wore, Mike Trout and Tommy La Stella , also number 45 on the jersey. The Angels wore a patch with the number 45 until the end of the 2019 season.All MLB players wore a patch with the number 45 on Players Weekend.
