The Typographische Gesellschaft München e. V. (tgm) is the largest and oldest active interest group in Europe to promote typography .

The association promotes quality and education in the communications industry with a wide range of advanced training courses from evening, day and weekend seminars to the “annual typography course”. This is accompanied by an annual series of lectures, conferences such as the Munich Typotag, exhibitions and competitions . In addition, tgm offers a variety of other activities, from study trips and excursions to company and factory visits to typographical site visits.

organization

The number of members is over 1300 (February 2018). This makes tgm the largest European organization for those interested in typography. Members include a. Designers , media designers , printers and students .

The annual editions produced for the members of tgm have been included several times in “The 50 most beautiful books of the year”.

history

The association was founded on May 14, 1890 in the rococo hall of the Hackerbräuhaus in Munich . After Cologne (1873), Leipzig (1877), Berlin (1879), Stuttgart (1881) and Brieg (1882), Munich was the sixth merger of this type in what was then Reich territory .

They met regularly on Sunday mornings in the Schützenlust restaurant in Munich. A tgm library was soon established there: In addition to individual book foundations, all technical journals and individual relevant new publications were in stock. In 1911 the library moved to the house of the Chamber of Crafts . Social events were also held, including a. Bowling evenings or technical carnival men's evenings .

In addition to the obligatory lectures with discussion, the first factory tours ( paint factory Michael Huber and paper factory Max Bullinger ) and the first factory tour ( machine factory Augsburg ) took place as early as 1891 . In 1892 the first two courses on Gabelsberger stenography and typographic drawing were held. In 1893 the first guest lecturer (from Nuremberg, name unknown) spoke about "the development of the accident material and the accident rate ". The first competition in 1894 dealt with the creation of a new tgm membership card. In 1902, tgm organized a book printing evening for the Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association and an exhibition of printing work on the occasion of the general assembly of the German Book Printers Association.

In 1903 the Association of German Typographical Societies was founded, which tgm joined with other typographic associations. In the first few years, the speakers for the lectures mostly came from within their own ranks - they were often even given by the 1st chairman - but the mutual exchange of speakers was now increasingly used.

The number of members fluctuated considerably in the first decades between 120 (1923) and almost 700. This was partly due to inflation (1923), strikes and lockouts in the printing industry (1891/1892), the two world wars, but also to the relatively high death rate at the time in typesetting and printing. From 1913 onwards, only members of the trade union association of German book printers were allowed to be admitted, in 1923 the Typographische Gesellschaft München had to be renamed "Ortsgruppe München im Bildungsverband Deutscher Buchdrucker". On May 2, 1933, this association was also broken up and, at the instigation of the National Socialists, became part of the “ German Labor Front , Gauwaltung Munich-Upper Bavaria, Department of Printing and Paper”. The Munich Typographical Society began again in 1949.

Many well-known personalities in the industry were active in the association in terms of organization and / or content. a. Otto Hupp , Anna Simons , Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke , Paul Renner , Emil Preetorius , Georg Trump , Jan Tschichold , Herbert Post , Josef Buyer, Konrad Driendl, Günter Gerhard Lange , Philipp Luidl , Hans Rudolf Bosshard , Olaf Leu , Eckehart Schumacher-Gebler, Rolf Müller (Logo), Kurt Weidemann , Rudolf Paulus Gorbach .

In 2002 tgm supported the Typographische Gesellschaft Austria (tga) with its establishment. In addition, tgm has been a founding member of the international typography working group in knowledge transfer since May 2015 and a founding member of the German Design Day since April 2016 , where it represents the areas it represents in the German Cultural Council .
