The USS Valdez (DE / FF-1096) was a Knox-class frigate . She served in the United States Navy from 1974 to 1991 . The ship was named after Phil Isadore Valdez (born April 13, 1946, † January 29, 1967), a naval medic who was shot by snipers while rescuing two wounded marines during a combat mission.
history
The Valdez was laid down on June 30, 1972 at Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans , Louisiana . The launch took place on March 24, 1973, the commissioning with the Navy on July 27, 1974.
The ship was used in the Atlantic Fleet , the home port was Charleston , South Carolina . It mostly operated in the Atlantic, the North and the Mediterranean. During her service life, the Valdez visited Bremerhaven and Kiel, among others .
The frigate was decommissioned on December 16, 1991, and remained in the Navy's register of ships until January 11, 1995. After it was deleted, it was sold to Taiwan on April 29, 1998 , where it arrived in Charleston on October 4, 1999 after extensive renovations. On October 18, the ship was put into service as YI YANG. She is still in active service with the Taiwanese Navy today .
