Ucumasi is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Ucumasi is the central place of the canton Ucumasi in the municipality of Salinas de Garcí Mendoza in the province of Ladislao Cabrera . The village is located at an altitude of 3762  m eight kilometers south of the Río Laca Jahuira , which flows from Lake Poopó in a westerly direction to the Salar de Coipasa .

Ucumasi is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east.

The climate is arid , the annual precipitation is only 200 mm (see climate diagram Salinas de Garcí Mendoza), with a pronounced dry season from April to November with only sporadic precipitation; only in the summer from December to March there is significant rainfall between 20 and 70 mm per month. The mean average temperature of the region is around 4.5 ° C and fluctuates only slightly between 0 ° C in July and 7 ° C in January.

Transport network

Ucumasi is located at a distance of 239 kilometers by road southwest of Oruro , the capital of the department.

The Ruta 1 road leads south from Oruro and reaches the town of Poopó after 53 kilometers and the town of Challapata after another 63 kilometers . From here, the Ruta leads 30 kilometers south via Santiago de Huari . After crossing a river, a dirt road turns southwest and after 19 kilometers leads to Santuario de Quillacas .

The road continues in a south-westerly direction via Bengal Vinto and Playa Verde to Salinas de Garcí Mendoza and the salt lake Salar de Uyuni . In Playa Verde, an inconspicuous unpaved side road branches off in a northerly direction, reaches Aroma after a further ten kilometers , and from there a country road also leads in a northerly direction to Ucumasi, 25 kilometers away .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Salinas de Garcí Mendoza 85.3 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
