Udo Ernst Simonis (born October 11, 1937 in Hilgert near Koblenz ) is a professor emeritus for environmental policy at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB).

Scientific career

The graduate economist from the University of Freiburg and doctorate in economics from Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel was personal advisor to President Kenneth Kaunda from 1967 to 1969 in the Zambian capital Lusaka , where he worked on projects for regional development. In 1970 he was one of twelve scientists worldwide to receive a grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, which enabled him to work as a research fellow at the Institute for Developing Countries Research and at the University of Tokyo.

In 1974 Simonis was appointed professor of economics at the Technical University of Berlin. From 1981 to 1987 he was director of the International Institute for Environment and Society (IIUG) at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin (WZB), and from 1988 to 2003 research professor for environmental policy there, since then Professor Emeritus.

From 1992 to 1996 Simonis was a member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). From 1993 to 2002 he was chairman of the scientific advisory board and member of the board of trustees of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). From 1999 to 2006 he was a member of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP) of the United Nations, from 2000 to 2002 President of the World Society for EKISTICS (WSE) and from 2004 to 2007 Co-Chairman of the Task Force on Environmental Governance for China. For a long time he was chairman of the board of trustees of the German Environmental Foundation and is still active on several scientific committees.

His main research interests are ecological structural change in the economy and society and global environmental policy . Among other things, he examined the possibilities of founding a world environmental organization .

Simonis has published the book series Contributions to municipal and regional planning by Verlag Peter Lang (20 volumes). From 1991 to 2016 he was the responsible editor and co-editor of the Jahrbuch Ökologie (25 volumes), which were published by CH Beck and S. Hirzel.

He has been married to the SPD politician Heide Simonis since 1967 .
