Interview in Afghanistan, end of September 2001, with Said Nurrulah Immam, Vice President of the Islamic Movement in Afghanistan

In 1994 he became a Europe and NATO correspondent in the ARD studio in Brussels . This was also the time of dangerous missions in the war in Bosnia and Kosovo during the withdrawal of Serb militants. At the end of 1999 Lielischkies moved to the ARD studio in Moscow as a correspondent, where he met his future wife Katia. During his time in Moscow, he also reported on the wars in Chechnya and Afghanistan .

In the summer of 2003 he interviewed the ex-Yukos boss Mikhail Khodorkovsky two months before his arrest. He described the allegations raised against him as "absurd" (cf. Russia reporting ). He took the circumstances of the proceedings against Khodorkovsky, which in his opinion contradicted fundamental principles of the rule of law, as an opportunity to shoot the report “Kremlin, Prison and Corruption”. A total of three films from the time he worked at the ARD studio in Moscow were nominated for the German TV Prize.

Since 2006 he has been a television correspondent at the ARD studio in Washington, and since July 1, 2007 also its deputy director. In August 2012 he returned to Moscow as a correspondent. From April 2014 until his retirement in September 2018 he was head of the ARD studio in Moscow. After his departure, Lielischkies wrote the book "In the shadow of the Kremlin - On the way in Putin's Russia", which will be published by Droemer-Knaur in October 2019.

Documentation and reports

In addition to the current reporting, Lielischkies mainly concentrated on longer reports and documentaries (over 50) as well as films for the ARD Weltspiegel.

  • Putin's games. With the torch through a cold Russia - documentary ARD January 27, 2014 script
  • Putin's Games - The Truth About Sochi Doku Arte 2014
  • Our Russia - A city trip to the World Cup, report, Das Erste, May 26th to June 10th 2018 (four parts), with Palina Rojinski

Incorrect reports

In a report on Eastern Ukraine for Tagesthemen on May 20, 2014, he erroneously claimed that two people had been killed by the separatists. When he realized the mistake after spectator protests (in fact the civilians were killed by shots by Ukrainian volunteers), the daily news corrected the mistake and deleted the report from the media library.

In May 2014, falsified footage was shown on the ARD “Tagesschau” to illustrate a helicopter shooting down near Slovyansk in eastern Ukraine. The sequence, which came from a YouTube video from 2013, actually showed a shooting down in Syria. The helicopter crash near Slovyansk was illustrated with a video from Syria. As the studio manager, Lielischkies apologized for this mistake.

Private life

Lielischkies financed his studies as a state-certified tennis instructor. He married Katja from Moscow on his 50th birthday and is the father of twins Julia and Alexej, who were born in Moscow, and Natalia, who was born in 2012. In addition to his native German, he also speaks Russian, English and French.
