Udo Rein

Udo Rein (born October 9, 1960 in Heidelberg ) is a German artist who has been involved in film art and painting internationally since 2000 .

Life

Udo Rein was born in Heidelberg in 1960. He began his career as an artist in the USA, where he lived for a long time in the 1980s and 1990s.

Especially in the technique of his work with photography and collage, Rein feels connected to the style of Robert Rauschenberg , Ray Johnson , Richard Hamilton and Mimmo Rotella . His technique in the special processing as a collage on wooden panels was new to him. It is an individual way of expression that arises from the experience with Pop and Street Art, art movements that had a strong influence on Rein's artistic career. In many places around the world, he uses films to document social and cultural contrasts. These recordings form the starting material for further artistic processing.

His first major exhibition took place in 2002 in conjunction with the Wertstatt Verlag Munich under the theme Time Panels .

Social contrasts are a focus in the work of Udo Rein, formerly alias Redo. Opposites are opposed to one another and are called into question.

His work begins with observation and film documentation, which is often the result of weeks, months, and sometimes even years of work - as in the case of the EX.IT series, a reproduction of images that are often already forgotten from the exploration of urban areas Situations arise.

From films to stills and from these to collages on wood. His TIME panels, originally all 50 × 50 cm in size, made from collages of Time Magazine titles , were the idea and the origin of his work today.

With Time 5min 5sec and Lost Paradise , two documentaries about the world of the homeless, the clochards and the unadjusted and their way of understanding time, the artist has developed two further series on the theme of time. These series include three documentaries with the associated four video installations and sixteen collages in oil and acrylic colors on wood.

In 2004, in collaboration with Cultural Affairs, the international map project Heimweg (the way home) was created with artists such as Pipilotti Rist , Richard Long , Kasper König and Jonathan Gallan.

Another project developed by the artist is Why cant Afghani people smoke , a documentary implementation of the armed conflict in Afghanistan and the problems facing women there. Also worth mentioning is the Exit Babel ( Babylon's shadow ) project, a documentation-based surrealist implementation of the story of John, a fellow prisoner of Nelson Mandela , who now guides tourists to the prison island Robben Island and thus comes to terms with his past. The film was presented for the first time at the Bauhaus University in Weimar as part of the international Babels Shade project.

In Cuba, Chile and Argentina - Madres de Plaza de Mayo - the artist tries to address the unexplained disappearance of people, be it because of the movement of peoples, natural disasters, religious backgrounds or displacement. The juxtapositions that the artist chooses to express his ideas could not be more contrary: Cuba, Ibiza, power, decay, regime, dictatorship, lust, energy, facade, force, fear, war and death are in their possible and diverse variations shown as social dispositions. The artist's perception of his surroundings triggers enormous impulses in him and motivates his documentations, such as Gazela, a reappraisal of the Sinti and Roma living in reception camps in Belgrade.

The documentary material was initially used to create an artistic film version, which the artist then processed into film stills and collages. The whole process is shown in the exhibition.

Udo Rein uses film stills as collage material for his paintings on wooden panels, for which he uses oil and acrylic paints.

His work is characterized by socially critical issues, such as in the projects with the homeless at Hinz and Kunzt in Hamburg, the townships in South Africa or the life of the homeless in all parts of the world. Udo Rein has been working with Galerie Bhak, one of the leading galleries in Seoul (South Korea), for several years.
