Ueli Prager
Ueli Prager (born August 15, 1916 in Wiesbaden ; † October 15, 2011 in Mettmenstetten ; resident in Zurich ) was a Swiss entrepreneur and founder of Mövenpick .
Life
The hotelier's son Prager, born in Wiesbaden in 1916, attended the Trogen Cantonal School from 1929 to 1936 . He then began studying at the University of Zurich , which he did not complete. From 1940 to 1944 he was an employee of the Swiss Hotel Trust Company. In 1948, Prager opened the first Mövenpick restaurant in the Claridenhof office building in Zurich, thanks to the advocacy of Ernst Göhner. Little by little, several branches were founded under his leadership.
Mövenpick developed into a large corporation, and in 1962 the fast food restaurant chain Silberkugel was opened based on the American model. The first two Mövenpick hotels were established in 1972. In 1970, the first wine cellars in Switzerland and Germany were opened under the name Caves Mövenpick, and in 1972 ice cream production began. At the end of the 1980s, Prager resigned as president. He initially left the business to his wife. In 1992, Prager, who distinguished himself as an entrepreneur with his good business acumen and willingness to take risks, sold the majority of Mövenpick shares to the German investor August von Finck junior .
Following the sale of Mövenpick, Prager moved to Maidenhead near London. Furthermore, he often stayed in Switzerland in his Crap da Sass castle on the Silvaplana plain in the Engadine. Prager was married three times and had six children. He died at the age of 95.
