Ulf Isak Leirstein (born June 30, 1973 in Sarpsborg ) is a Norwegian politician . He belonged to the right-wing Fremskrittspartiet (FrP) until he left in April 2019 . Since 2005 he has been a member of parliament in Storting .

Life

Leirstein grew up in what was then Rygge as the son of a teacher couple before he moved to Moss with his mother at the age of 15 . He graduated from high school in 1992. From 1993 to 1994 he worked part-time as the secretary of the FrP in what was then the province of Østfold . He then headed the youth organization Fremskrittspartiets Ungdom (FpU) between 1994 and 1995 . From 1991 to 2011 and again from 2015 to 2019 he was a member of the Moss City Council. Leirstein was the deputy mayor of the municipality between 1999 and 2003. He was also a member of the Fylkesting of Østfold from 1995 to 2007 .

Storting MP

In the 2005 general election Leirstein moved for the first time in the Norwegian National Parliament Storting one. There he represents the constituency of Østfold and he was initially a member of the finance committee, where he took over the deputy chairmanship. He kept this post after the 2009 election before moving to the Judiciary Committee as a simple member during the current legislative period. He stayed there after the Storting elections in 2013 and 2017 . In January 2018, he moved to the Control and Constitutional Committee. From October 2013 to January 2018, Leirstein also served as deputy group chairman.

Allegations and withdrawal from the party

In January 2018, Leirstein resigned from his internal party positions as spokesman for judicial policy and as deputy parliamentary group leader. It was previously known that he had sent emails with pornographic content to members of the FrP youth organization FpU, including a 14-year-old in 2012. A case was also reported in which he suggested in a text message to a woman to invite a 15-year-old FpU member to a threesome . Some FrP politicians then confirmed that they already knew rumors about this SMS in 2012 and that they confronted Leirstein with them, but that he rejected the allegations.

In April 2019 he finally resigned from the Fremskrittspartiet. He has since continued his mandate as an independent MP. In October 2019, Leirstein founded a consulting agency in which he would like to work in the period after the election in 2021 .

Positions

Before the US presidential election in 2016 , he openly declared his support for Donald Trump . Together with his then party colleagues Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Per-Willy Amundsen , he nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 . The reason they gave was the meeting between Trump and the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and Trump's disarmament efforts on the Korean peninsula.
