Ulrich Denkhaus

Ulrich Denkhaus (born September 27, 1938 in Bremen ; † January 1, 2013 in Wetzlar ) was a German pastor , physicist and representative of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland for energy issues .

Life & Education

Denkhaus was born the son of a pastor and studied Protestant theology after graduating from high school . He completed his vicariate with Karl Immer, who later became President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland, in Duisburg . On December 6, 1964, the Denkhaus was ordained . Denkhaus took a leave of absence to study physics and then worked as a student pastor in Aachen and Jülich . In Jülich he had worked on the nuclear research facility there . He later received his doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. with a topic on solid state physics. From 1981 to 2001 Denkhaus was pastor in Velbert . After his retirement in 2002 he moved to Wetzlar, the hometown of his wife Hildegard.

Denkhaus had been married since 1973. He has two daughters, Ruth Denkhaus is also a theologian and deals with ethical issues in medicine.

Act

In 1978, Denkhaus became the commissioner for “scientific-technical energy problems and their theological aspects” and the topic “energy issues” in the EKiR. In 1979, Denkhaus co-authored a church work aid for the peaceful use of nuclear energy . Denkhaus took part in numerous events of the Protestant Church on energy and environmental issues across Germany as a speaker and expert. Denkhaus became known to a wider audience through the publication “Renewable Energies - A Chance for Rural Areas in the South” from 2004, published by the development and environmental organization Germanwatch , of which he had been a member since 2001. Even after his retirement until shortly before his death, Denkhaus worked at the synodal level on questions of responsibility for creation and the environment.
