Karl Immer (theologian)

Karl Eduard Immer (born May 28, 1916 in Rysum ; † January 3, 1984 in Düsseldorf ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Karl Immer, son of the Gemarker pastor Karl Immanuel Immer , father of the baroque trumpeter Friedemann Immer , studied Protestant theology at the church college for Reformation theology in Elberfeld and at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , where he studied with Julius Schniewind in 1943 graduated as a licentiate in theology .

After the Second World War he became a pastor in Duisburg-Neudorf in 1948 . In 1968 the Rhenish Synod elected him to the upper church council, and on June 12, 1971, he was elected President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland - an office he held until his retirement in February 1981. He had been a member of the regional synod since 1952 and had been a part-time member of the church leadership since 1958.

Karl Immer was shaped by the church struggle and stood in the tradition of Karl Barth's theology . He always advocated not to forget the experiences of the church struggle. In the early 1970s he was one of the prominent supporters of Willy Brandt's Ostpolitik . His special commitment consisted in maintaining connections to the Protestant regional churches in the German Democratic Republic and to the churches of the Eastern Bloc.

He was actively involved in the Christian Peace Conference (CFK): in 1961 as a participant in the 1st  All-Christian Peace Assembly (ACFV) and in 1964 in the II. ACFV in Prague .

Karl Immer died on the morning of January 3, 1984 in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth after a long and serious illness .
