Ulrich Fleischmann

Ulrich Fleischmann (born June 20, 1938 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber ; † February 7, 2011 in Berlin ) was a German Caribbean researcher who received international renown for his work .

life and work

Fleischmann studied Romance studies , sociology and ethnology in Munich and Paris . In 1967 received his doctorate he with a study of the literature of Haiti Dr. phil. In 1980 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on the social history of the Creole languages . Fleischmann took on a substitute professorship at the University of Bayreuth from 1981 to 1982 . From 1982 he worked at the Institute for Romance Philology, from 1985 until his retirement in 2003 at the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin. During his academic career, he held various visiting professorships, including at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria , the University of Warwick in England , the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro , the Universidad de Costa Rica and the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico .

Fleischmann was one of the founding members of the Society for Caribbean Research, which he also chaired for many years. He was also a member of the German Latin American Research Working Group and the Comité International des Études Créoles and was chairman of the Asociación de Estudios de Literatura y Sociedad de América Latina.

In establishing the Caribbean region as a transdisciplinary research area, he made a significant contribution through his literary, linguistic and cultural studies. The studies he made on the literature and society of Haiti as well as on the Creole languages ​​and cultures are considered pioneering work in Caribbean studies in the German-speaking area. Further research dealt with the literatures of Hispanic America and Brazil .

Fleischmann died in early February 2011 after a brief serious illness at the age of 72. He was married and had two daughters. His daughter Stephanie was a lecturer in Spanish and Latin American cultural studies at the University of Mainz from 2005 to 2011 and has been a post-doctoral fellow at the graduate school “Between Spaces” on a project on emotional coldness in globalized textual worlds of new Latin American novels and narratives outdoors University of Berlin .
