Ulrich Hipparchus von Promnitz

Ulrich Hipparchos Graf von Promnitz (born January 2, 1636 at Sorau Castle , Niederlausitz; † July 29, 1695 in Pförten , Niederlausitz) was lord of the forest and Pförten, baron of the civil lordship of Pless on Sorau, Triebel and Naumburg . He was also Chamberlain of Brandenburg and Electoral Saxony , Privy Councilor , Sergeant General and Colonel of the Cavalry . As a guardian, he ruled the lordships of Sorau and Triebel from 1664 to 1678.

Life

He was the son of Siegmund Siegfried Graf von Promnitz (* July 16, 1595; † July 30, 1654) and his first wife Anne Margarethe von Putbus (* 1604; † June 29, 1645).

In 1640 his family fled to Poland before the Thirty Years War . In 1644 he returned to Sorau and in 1646 went to the University of Halle , in 1650 moved to the University of Wittenberg , and in 1652 to the University of Gießen where he became rector magnificus .

He then traveled through Germany, France, the Spanish Netherlands and back via Denmark and Sweden to Sorau. In 1657 he went to Vienna and became a captain under the Count of Buchheim in Transylvania . In 1658 he received a regiment under General Montecuccoli .

He served in various regiments and also fought in Hungary. But since he was a Protestant, he was not promoted further. In 1661 he returned to the rule of Pless, which he administered for the next 14 years. In 1664 he became the guardian of his then five-year-old nephew Balthasar Erdmann (1659–1703) in the lords of Sorau and Triebel , which he ruled until 1678. In 1667, he inherited Pförten Castle and, thanks to his numerous descendants, founded the Promnitz line in Pförten.

In 1671 he recruited a regiment on horseback for Elector Friedrich Wilhelm . With this he moved against the French to the Rhine in 1672. On January 30, 1677 he was appointed major general, fought against the Swedes in the Battle of Fehrbellin and further in Pomerania and Prussia . During the siege of Stettin he was in command of the electoral body regiment. But in 1679 he took his leave.

In 1680 he went to the Electoral Saxon service. Elector Johann Georg III. made him major general, chamberlain, secret war council and 1st company chief of the cavalry division Guard-Reiter-Regiment (1st Heavy Regiment) . After two years he left Saxony, came to Italy via Vienna in 1685, from here he traveled home to visit Sweden and Denmark in 1686. In 1687 he took part in the coronation of Prince Joseph as King of Hungary in Pressburg. He died on July 29, 1695 in Pförten.

He always tried to promote his Protestant religion and built many Protestant churches in Saxony.

He was married to Magdalena Sidonia von Putbus († 1685) since September 1663 . With her he had three daughters and 10 sons. After her death in 1687 he married Regina Isabella Rüber von Pixendorf (* May 30, 1641; † October 15, 1720) daughter of Ferdinand Rüber von Pixendorf († 1689) and Anna Mistress of Jörger Freiin von Tollet . The last marriage was without children.
