Ulrich von Frundsberg

Ulrich von Frundsberg († August 10, 1493 in Cavalese ) was Prince-Bishop of Trento from 1488 to 1493 .

Origin and education

Ulrich von Frundsberg was the son of Ulrich von Frundsberg (1425–1501) and Barbara von Rechberg-Mindelheim († 1506). The Frundsberg , a Tyrolean noble family, are documented in Schwaz in the 12th century , probably as ministerials of the Freising bishops. Ulrich's father of the same name, captain of the Swabian Confederation and councilor of the Tyrolean Duke Sigismund , sold his property in Tyrol in 1467/68 and acquired the rule of Mindelheim together with his wife Barbara, a daughter of Bero von Rechberg, Lord of Mindelheim, and Barbara von Rottenburg in Swabia. The Landsknechtführer Georg von Frundsberg was Ulrich's younger brother.

Ulrich studied law, in 1469 and 1486 he is documented as canon in Brixen , he received further canons in Augsburg and Freising in 1473. He is attested as canon in Trient in 1475 , and in 1489 he renounced the Freising benefice .

On September 30, 1486, the cathedral chapter of Trent elected Ulrich von Frundsberg as bishop. The papal confirmation took place on July 11th 1488, the episcopal ordination received Frundsberg in Rome. He took possession of his diocese on August 7, and the regalia were awarded to him on September 24, 1488.

In 1489 a diocesan synod was held for the first time in 50 years . Frundsberg took care of the expansion of the episcopal library and the pilgrimage church of Sanzeno in Val di Non . Frundsberg died on August 10, 1493 in Cavalese and was buried in the Cathedral of Trento .
