Kardina Umberto Betti OFM (born March 7, 1922 in Pieve Santo Stefano , Arezzo province , Italy ; † April 1, 2009 in Fiesole , Florence province ) was an Italian Roman Catholic theologian and cardinal .

Life

After finishing school, Umberto Betti joined the Franciscan order on July 23, 1937 . After the novitiate, he made his temporary profession on August 2, 1938 and his perpetual profession on December 31, 1943. On April 5, 1946, he received the sacrament of ordination .

He studied at the Pontifical University of Antonianum , the religious college of the Franciscans in Rome , and received his doctorate in theology in 1946 with a dogmatic thesis . After lecturing in Siena and Fiesole, he went on to study at the Catholic University in Leuven, Belgium .

In 1964 he received a call to the professor of dogmatic theology at the Antonianum in Rome, he taught at the until September 27 1991st He was dean of the theological faculty and rector of the Antonianum.

Umberto Betti was an advisor to the Second Vatican Council . He worked on the Council documents “ Dei Verbum ” and “ Lumen Gentium ”. After various important positions at the Curia , Betti was rector of the Pontifical Lateran University from 1991 to 1995 .

He was awarded the “Honorary Diploma” of the Pontifical Academy of Theology (“Academia Pontifícia Teológica Romana”), as well as the Florentine Il Fiorino d'Oro Prize .

On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him . as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia in the college of cardinals . Although cardinals should actually be bishops according to canon law, Betti was dispensed from this obligation by the Pope at his request .
