Una Dirks

Una Dirks (* 1961 in Eckernförde , Schleswig-Holstein ) is a German linguist and educationalist and was a university teacher .

Life

After graduating from high school in Lake Geneva , Wisconsin (USA, 1978) and graduating from the Jungmannschule Eckernförde (1981), Una Dirks studied at the Universities of Kiel, Heidelberg, Montpellier and Marburg from 1981 to 1987. From 1988 to 1990 she received a doctoral scholarship from the State of Hesse . In 1991 she did her doctorate in linguistics ( Dr. phil. ) And by 1993 Dirks completed a traineeship at the Elisabeth School in Marburg . At the same time she was a lecturer at the English Department of the University of Marburg in the areas of applied linguistics and English didactics .

After the second state examination (1993), she was appointed university assistant (C1) in the educational sciences department of the Martin Luther University Halle , where Dirks qualified as a professor in 1998 with the participation of the University of Magdeburg with a study on the professionalization of English teachers in the new federal states has been.

From 1999 to 2011 she was professor for applied linguistics and English didactics at the University of Hildesheim .

In 2012 and 2013 she was visiting professor at Colorado State University , Fort Collins , Colorado (USA) for L 2, n Reading Literacy in Higher Education . Further teaching assignments followed, including at the European University of Flensburg , the Philipps University of Marburg and the Universities of Montpellier III and Paris-Est Crétail (UPEC). In addition, she then worked as a research assistant at the University of Kassel and the Philipps University of Marburg.

Una Dirks' work and research focus is on research-based learning, reflective teacher training and the acquisition of skills in the course of education (diagnostic, reading and writing skills) under the conditions of multilingualism. In the context of intervention and evaluation projects, she examined the opportunities and obstacles to the professionalization of (future) teachers and structured learning for pupils (cf. scaffolding ) who use German as their mother, foreign and second language. Dirks u. a. with individual text types and forms that play a decisive role in school and educational success.

Another focus of work and research is on Dirk's transcultural media linguistic analyzes, beginning with her dissertation on persuasive concept metaphors and modes of argumentation in political linguistic usage (1991), to which she is working on a project funded by the German Peace Research Foundation on the media construction of reasons for war in Third Iraq war follows (inter alia Dirks 2005a, b, 2008, 2010).
