Uncle Slam was an American thrash metal and crossover band from Los Angeles , California that formed in 1984 under the name The Brood , renamed in 1987, and split in 1995.
history
The band was founded in 1984 under the name The Brood by guitarists and singers Jon Nelson and Todd Moyer, bassist John Flitcraft and ex- suicidal tendencies drummer Amery Smith. After the self-titled album was released in 1986, the group changed their name to Uncle Slam in 1987. Flitcraft left the band before the name change and was replaced by Louiche Mayorga, who previously worked for Suicidal Tendencies. Mayorga left the band shortly afterwards, so that Bob Heathcote, who would later also play in Suicidal Tendencies, was accepted into the band. Heathcote was replaced a little later by Simon Oliver. Uncle Slam released their first album called Say Uncle in 1988 on Caroline Records . Oliver left the band in 1989 and was replaced by Angelo Espino. After Oliver rejoined the band in 1991, the next album was Will Work for Food in 1993 on Restless Records . The following year, Smith left the cast, so he was replaced by ex-Suicidal-Tendencies member RJ Herrera. Moyer, Oliver and Herrera then went into the studio to record their final album, When God Dies , which was released on Medusa Records in 1995 before the band broke up that year. After the breakup, Smith joined the Beastie Boys and BS in 2000 . He then joined AgainST , a band made up of ex- Excel singer Dan Clements and ex-Suicidal Tendencies members Grant Estes, Amery Smith and Louiche Mayorga.
style
The band plays fast thrash metal typical of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their style of music is compared to that of the band Suicidal Tendencies , to which there are also personal connections, or as "the most generic of generic Thrash", which is a copy of other copies. On Say Uncle , the band plays “pretty traditional American-style crossover thrash” with hardcore elements, which has also been referred to as “ skateboarding music ”. The lyrics deal with typical topics such as sublimity, being an outcast, vengeance, war and politics. The album is considered a crossover thrash classic. The album is considered by many critics as a not particularly innovative album, “but it definitely goes well with I Hate Therefore I Am ( Cyclone Temple ), Born To Expire ( Leeway ) [,] Mind Wars ( Holy Terror ), Beast On My Back ( Crumbsuckers ) and Kill To Survive ( Meliah Rage ), one of the favorite albums of any metal collector, but critically undervalued albums ever released ”.
