Excel was a thrash metal and crossover band from Venice , California that was formed in 1983 by singer Dan Clements and guitarist Adam Siegel. They were mainly influenced by punk rock bands from the 1970s like The Police and The Sex Pistols , as well as metal bands like Black Sabbath , Trouble , Slayer , Corrosion of Conformity and Cryptic Slaughter . They were also influenced by street art . The band is known for spraying graffiti . They mainly distributed their logos in streets of cities where they held their tours.
Excel has performed repeatedly with various bands from Venice and other parts of California. Some of these bands were No Mercy , Beowülf , Suicidal Tendencies (with whom they are close friends) and Cryptic Slaughter . They also performed with other thrash metal bands such as Testament and Overkill .
The band split in 1995 and released new versions of two albums in 2001, which also contained some bonus songs. In August 2009 the band released eight DVDs of their tours through Europe and Los Angeles on their Myspace page.
history
The band was founded in 1983 under the name Chaotic Noise by Dan Clements and Adam Siegel. A short time later, drummer Evan Warech joined the band, while the bassist was still changing, Dan Clements added: "We had a different bassist every four months, and people just figured we were unstable" ("We had a different bassist every four months." and people thought our line-up was just unstable ”). In 1984 Rickey Pallamino took over the post. With this line-up, the band recorded their first demos. The following year Warech and Pallamino left the band. The new bass player was Shaun Ross, who gave the band the name Excel with his graffiti group KSN (Kings Stop at Nothing).
A few months later, Greg Saenz joined the band as the new drummer. Excel was heard with three songs on the compilation Welcome to Venice , which was released by Suicidal Records . Over the next few months they recorded three more demos: Sonic Decapitation in February 1985, Personal Onslaught on June 9, and Refuse to Quit in January 1986. In 1987, the band was on the videotape Thrasher Skate Rock 5: Born to Skate with the To hear the song Insecurity . The song was also featured on their first studio album, Split Image . The album was recorded with Suicidal Records and released by Caroline Records in July of the same year. Excel has had a few live performances in Los Angeles over the past few years. On June 16, 1987, the band gave their first official concert at Fender's Grand Ballroom in Long Beach , California. A second time followed on March 18, 1988 to promote their new album. Later that year the band released their first single , a cover version of the song Message in a Bottle , which was originally released by The Police.
In early 1989, the band recorded another single to promote the second album called The Joke's on You . It was released on June 20, 1989 via Caroline Records. In March, the band performed at Chuck Landis Country Club in Reseda , California and the Palasades Theater in San Diego with the band Bl'ast . In November the band held their first tour. This went through the Netherlands and took place in the cities of Sneek , Heemskerk , Eindhoven , Rotterdam , Goes and Den Bosch .
On their way back to the United States, the band played at The Palace in Hollywood , California and at the Star Club in Ybor City , Tampa , Florida and Philadelphia on April 29, 1990. Adam Siegel then left the band and joined Infectious Grooves in around 1991 to record the album The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move ... It's the Infectious Grooves . In 1992 he returned to the band to play with Excel at the club in Whiskey A Go Go in Hollywood. A few months later they recorded the fifth demo. These recordings later appeared on the re-release of The Joke's on You . In 1993 Siegel returned to Infectious Grooves to record another album on February 16. He and Greg Saenz then founded the band My Head . So the exit from Excel was final. After three years, Excel recorded a new split album. Brandon Rudley played the electric guitar and Max the drums. The band shared the album with the band Shrine . They recorded their final single to record their third and final album, Seeking Refuge . The album was released on August 29, 1995. Then the band split up. In 2003, the ex-members sued the band Metallica over the song Enter Sandman , which the ex-members believe was strongly based on the song Tapping into the Emotional Void , which was on the LP The Joke's on You in 1989, so two Years before the album Metallica was released. This was strongly supported in an interview by Dave Mustaine , a member of Megadeth . In May 2006 singer Dan Clements founded together with the original members of Suicidal Tendencies Grant Estes (electric guitar), Amery Smith (drums) and Louiche Mayorga (electric bass), as well as with Kevin Guercio (singer), ex-member of No Mercy who have favourited Against . Together they recorded two songs for the split album called Welcome 2 Venice . A cover version of the song Your Life, My Life could be heard on a special edition of the album Omen (2010) by the band Soulfly .
